StarStarStarStar

There’s never a bad time to meet in Chicago. With four distinct seasons, Chicago offers a fresh experience for meetings and events every month of the year.

It’s one of the reasons that Chicago has been named the Best Big City in the U.S. for the past nine years in a row — every season shines here.

Winter, spring, summer, and fall each bring their own unique advantages, ranging from pricing and availability to seasonal events and new ways to engage attendees.

When you’re ready to set a date for your next conference, meeting, or special event, use the tips to find your ideal time to meet in Chicago.

December through February

  • Fewer crowds
  • Lower rates on airfare, hotels, and venues
  • More venue availability
  • Snowy winter magic

Capitalize on unbeatable rates

As event costs continue to rise, meeting planners are becoming more budget-conscious. Chicago in winter is the perfect time to get more value out of your next meeting.

January through February typically brings the lowest airfare rates of the year for flights to and from Chicago’s two international airports.

And the great deals extend to our hotels: room rates across the city can drop significantly compared to peak summer pricing. This is also the time to take advantage of special packages, perks, and group discounts. Many Chicago venues will have more availability and off-season rates throughout the winter months.

Plus, events like Chicago Restaurant Week and Chicago Theatre Week make it easy to save on dining and entertainment.

Experience a city built for winter

No need to worry about the winter temperatures — your group can go days without even feeling the chill with the right planning.

The McCormick Place Convention Center is directly attached to three world-class hotels: Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Hiltons at McCormick Place, and the Marriott Marquis. The entire campus is connected via a network of enclosed skybridges, making it easy to visit the many meeting spaces, restaurants, and enclosed transportation concourse.

Plus, our city infrastructure is ready for any type of weather — so you’ll never have to let cold or snow slow you down.

Spend less time in line

Winter is a quieter time in Chicago, especially after the holidays — so your attendees can enjoy memorable experiences, minus the crowds.

Take advantage of this slower season to visit top attractions like Skydeck Chicago, 360 CHICAGO, the Museum Campus, The Magnificent Mile, and the new Obama Presidential Center. It’s also a great time to grab tickets to see the Chicago Bulls (NBA) and the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) at the legendary United Center.

Embrace the season

Winter in Chicago can be a real treat, especially for attendees coming from climates that don’t often see a cold-weather winter.

Guests can enjoy classic winter experiences, like ice skating at McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park, taking a winter dinner cruise, or visiting the all-seasons Lincoln Park Zoo. Afterward, cozy up on one of Chicago’s many year-round rooftop bars, decked out for winter with firepits, igloos, and even curling rinks.

Winter also brings an array of top cultural experiences, like museum exhibits, Chicago Theatre Week, artisan markets, comedy shows, and more.

Spring in Chicago

March through May

  • Shoulder season
  • Buzzy events
  • Spring blooms
  • The start of outdoor events

Get a breath of fresh air

Spring typically brings mild to warm temperatures to Chicago, plus smaller crowds than the busy summer season. This makes it an ideal time to take advantage of some of the city’s semi-outdoor and all-season spaces.

The Chicago Riverwalk is a stunning pedestrian waterfront lined with alfresco restaurants and bars — City Winery boasts a glass-enclosed dining area. Check out rooftop bars with jaw-dropping views and indoor-outdoor spaces, like Cindy’s, LH Rooftop, and Raised. Or hop aboard one of the city’s scenic boat cruises, with climate-controlled interiors that will keep attendees comfortable no matter the weather.

Take in local events

As the weather warms up, so does the city’s event calendar. Spring kicks off in Chicago with the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, including the famous dyeing of the Chicago River — a true bucket-list event for visitors from around the world.

Attendees can also explore one of our famed flower and garden shows, the Chicago Latino Film Festival, the annual EXPO Chicago Contemporary Art Fair at the Navy Pier, or Sueños Music Festival in lakefront Grant Park.

See iconic Chicago sports teams

In the spring, Opening Day brings the start of baseball action for the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox, while the Bulls and Blackhawks wrap up their seasons at the United Center.

This action-packed time for the Chicago sports scene presents the perfect opportunity for group outings, private stadium tours, or after-hours activities. You can also book events at Wrigley Field, Guaranteed Rate Field, and the United Center, complete with exclusive behind-the-scenes tours, private suites, and more.

Summer in Chicago

June through August

  • Peak season
  • Warmest temperatures
  • Top festivals and events
  • Stunning outdoor spaces

Book unique outdoor spaces

Make the most of the glorious summer season at unique outdoor spaces that will wow attendees. Check out spaces with panoramic waterfront views, like 63rd Street Beach House, Shore Club, Offshore Rooftop, Reggies on the Beach, the Shedd Aquarium terrace, and more. Many of these seasonal venues are only open in the summer months.

Other venues with memorable outdoor areas include Café Brauer atLincoln Park Zoo (large groups can take over the whole zoo); Salvage One’s lush courtyard, the Sculpture Garden at Bridgeport Art Center, Rockwell on the River, The Salt Shed, and more.

Take advantage of summer events

There’s plenty of built-in entertainment to book your meetings around. Annual music festivals like the Chicago House Music Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, and Chicago Jazz Festival capture the city’s soul and unique music scene.

Or celebrate culture and diversity at neighborhood events like the Pride Parade and Fest in historic Northalsted, Chinatown Summer Fair, Puerto Rican Festival and Parade in Humboldt Park. The lakefront Chicago Air and Water Show is the largest free air and water show in the country. And the show-stopping Lollapalooza is always a crowd-pleaser.

Get your group on the water

Summer is the best time to enjoy Chicago’s two sparkling waterfronts — the Chicago River, which cuts through the heart of the city, and Lake Michigan, one of the country’s largest fresh water lakes.

Kayaking and paddleboarding are great ways to get outdoors, get active, and see Chicago from a different point of view. Group tours are available, or you can allow attendees to row at their leisure.

No trip to Chicago is complete without going on the famed architectural boat tour to soak in views of the city’s most famous and influential buildings. Or treat your guests to a luxurious dinner cruise — and time it to catch the Navy Pier fireworks, a spectacle every Wednesday and Saturday during the summer.

September through November

  • Shoulder season
  • Gorgeous weather
  • The start of fall colors
  • Tons of art and culture

Enjoy great rates and lovely days

Fall is a wonderful time to be in Chicago. After the busy summer rush, planners can find great deals on hotel rates and venues, making it more cost-effective to book larger blocks of rooms and event spaces.

Plus, you can count on great weather throughout autumn, with comfortable temperatures, sunny skies, and the start of stunning fall colors. You can still take advantage of outdoor venues and activities that are still available in the fall.

Take advantage of cultural happenings

Fall is when culture shines in Chicago. The city’s calendar is packed with art exhibits, film festivals, and live theatre from Broadway in Chicago and smaller storefront venues.

Mark your calendar for fall festivals like the Chicago Architecture Biennial and Open House Chicago, both free citywide architecture festivals; the Chicago International Film Festival, the longest-running competitive film festival in North America; and Chicago Gourmet, a multi-day culinary celebration for the city’s best chefs.

Treat attendees to spooky fun

Few destinations get into the Halloween spirit quite like Chicago.

Fun options for events include the whimsical Arts in the Dark Parade on State Street with illuminated floats, giant puppets, dancers, and ensembles; the Haunted Halsted Halloween Parade in Northalsted; and the Jack’s Pumpkin Pop-Up on Goose Island. Or travel a bit north to the Chicago Botanic Garden for their annual Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns. Plus, find Day of the Dead celebrations all around Chicago.
