5 New Rooftop Retreats

Treat your group to dazzling city views and a cocktail or two at one of Chicago’s newest rooftop venues.

One of the best ways to enjoy summertime in Chicago is with dinner and drinks on a sky-high patio. Rooftops are all the rage, and they continue to pop up in neighborhoods throughout the city. Check out these five new rooftop retreats that are sure to impress your group.

Gibsons Italia

This stunning three-level Italian steakhouse boasts sweeping views of the Chicago River. The main dining room is on the second floor (sharing space with a semi-private dining room), while the third floor features a lounge with a dramatic retractable roof that allows for year-round cocktails with picturesque water views that change with the season. Must-orders include the lobster cocktail and USDA-certified Gibsons Prime Angus filet mignon.

Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises recently unveiled Aba in the hot Fulton Market, featuring a sprawling terrace with downtown skyline vistas and fire pits for cool evenings. The menu was inspired by summer in the Mediterranean, and features a variety of hummus (try the artichoke version), along with entrees like slow-braised leg of lamb wrapped in eggplant. The Dalcy is the restaurant’s adjacent private event hall that’s perfect for large group dining or cocktail receptions.

Soak up the Chicago River views from the rooftop patio of the new Terrace 16 restaurant and bar, located on the 16thfloor of Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago. The 200-seat alfresco spot is located adjacent to the organic herb and vegetable garden cultivated by Executive Chef Nick Dostal. Try the sweet pea garden toast or seared scallops. Desserts include the playful smores for the table.

©Z Bar

Located on the sixth floor of The Peninsula Chicago, Z Bar offers a globally influenced menu with a side of breathtaking Magnificent Mile views. Z Bar is named for Maria Zec, The Peninsula Hotels’ first female general manager, known for teaming up innovative chefs and mixologists. Shareable plates include Malaysian-style chicken and beef satay, Wagyu beef mini sliders and steak fondue. Rare spirits and small-batch bitters are used to make craft cocktails like the Paloma: agave, Pamplemousse Rose liqueur and grapefruit tonic.

Devereaux is the stylish rooftop lounge and seasonal pool located 18 stories atop the Viceroy Chicago hotel in the Gold Coast neighborhood, offering panoramic Lake Michigan and skyline views. Light bites like tuna poke are whipped up by Chef Lee Wolen, a James Beard Award nominee who oversees the hotel’s acclaimed Somerset restaurant. Try a craft cocktail like the Rosé Cobbler made with rosé, pineapple rum, Campari, mint and lime.
