The largest manufacturing show in the Western Hemisphere is back in Chicago.
This year’s International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) is being held at Chicago’s McCormick Place from Sept. 14 – 19, 2026.
If you’re planning to attend, you’re in luck — September is one of the best times to visit Chicago. Expect gorgeous weather, fewer crowds, and a packed calendar of things to do and see. It’s the perfect time to explore the only destination to be voted Best Big City in the U.S. for an unprecedented nine years in a row.
Here are just a few classic Chicago activities and events to enjoy while you’re in town for IMTS 2026.
Things to do in Chicago during IMTS 2026

Hop on an architecture boat cruise
See the best of the city on a Chicago boat cruise. The city’s beloved architecture tours are a top attraction for a reason. Choose from a variety of options that cruise down the Chicago River, Lake Michigan shoreline, or both. You’ll learn the stories behind the city’s most recognizable buildings and the fascinating history that shaped Chicago.
Dive into the dining scene
Home of the James Beard Awards, Chicago’s dining scene is internationally renowned. Splurge on a bucket-list meal from award-winning restaurants (including the world-famous Alinea) and top steakhouses (like Asador Bastian, recently named the best steakhouse in North America).
And don’t miss iconic local bites — sample classic Chicago-style pizza (try deep dish, tavern style, or both), our famous Italian beef sandwich, and more only-in-Chicago dishes.
Wander the Chicago Riverwalk and The Mag Mile
From McCormick Place, make your way a few blocks west to Ping Tom Memorial Park. From there, hop on the Chicago Water Taxi and enjoy a scenic ride to the heart of downtown. The Michigan Avenue stop drops you off in the perfect spot to explore The Magnificent Mile and the Chicago Riverwalk, a bustling pedestrian strip filled with waterfront patios.
Explore a Chicago museum
Spend an afternoon exploring one of Chicago’s world-class museums. Along the lakefront, the Chicago Museum Campus is home to the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Adler Planetarium. Nearby, the Art Institute of Chicago houses some of the world’s most famous artworks. In Jackson Park, explore the Museum of Science and Industry or the new Obama Presidential Center.
Rent a kayak or paddleboard
One of the best ways to see Chicago is from the water. You can rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the city’s two sparkling waterfronts, including the Chicago River or Lake Michigan. Or join a guided tour to learn the history of Chicago’s iconic architecture.
See a live show
After work is done for the day, snag tickets to see an evening show. Choose from blockbuster performances from Broadway In Chicago, presented in stunning historic venues. See who’s playing at our legendary music venues or catch a set at an iconic Chicago comedy club, like a classic improv show at The Second City.
Take a food tour
Take a bite of Chicago’s award-winning dining scene with a food tour of the city. Savor the city one slice at a time with Chicago Pizza Tours, try an Italian beef and more spots made famous on The Bear with Chicago Food & City Tours, eat your way through Chinatown and other foodie neighborhoods with Bobby’s Bike Hike, and more.
