There's nothing like a bachelorette party to channel your girl power. Which is why these four outside-the-box, hip, fun and flirty party ideas — from vintage pin-up photo shoots and burlesque lessons to circus arts and swimming with mermaids — will have them talking about "the best bachelorette party ever" for months.
Become a Classic Pin-Up Girl
At Vavoom Pinups (724 W Hubbard St), you and your friends can make like Betty Grable and be transformed into classic pin-ups of the 40s and 50s for a time-of-your-life photo shoot. As Vavoom explains, "Working with exceptional hair and makeup artists, retouchers, and photographers, we transform everyday modern women into iconic images of the past with a nod to the present."
After you've been pampered in hair and makeup, you'll descend Vavoom's staircase and step into vintage bliss. Pick from over 20 feet of old hollywood gowns, flirty daytime dresses, pencil skirts, vintage furs, glitzy jewels, vintage swimsuits, play rompers, satin numbers, and peep-toe shoes for a little piece of dress-up heaven. Next, pick your set — retro living room, vintage kitchen, sexy chaise lounge, you name it. At the end of the session you'll have the chance for a fun group shoot.
Get a Lesson in Burlesque
You'll be bumping, grinding, shimmying and shaking your way to sexiness with Vaudezilla Studio's customized burlesque bachelorette classes (3614 W Belmont Ave). Go all out with tiaras, feather boas, gloves, tassels, or any other party favors that take your fancy. For an extra fun momento, order your bachelorette partygoers a Vaudezilla Coloring Book (coloring outside the lines encouraged!).
Chicago Burlesque is one of Chicago's top-rated burlesque cabarets, exuding sex appeal and pageantry from every pore, with incredible costumes, dancing, magic and a dose of the circus arts. Check out the schedule of performances to round out the perfect bachelorette event.
Do a Little Aerial Ballet
If you've always dreamed of running off to the circus, you may want to head to Logan Square for your bachelorette party instead. Aloft Loft ( 3324 W Wrightwood Ave) is all about contemporary circus training -- think walking a tightwire, being enveloped in aerial silks, striking a pose on the trapeze, and spinning on an aerial hoop. Aloft Loft's 90-minute workshops are a really fun introduction to the circus arts, bringing out your most graceful self, while giving your entire party a pretty great workout. Among Aloft Loft's trainers are world-class performers who make Aloft their home base when not on contract. They'll quickly show you that gravity is entirely irrelevant! An added bonus is the location, within a converted Evangelical church — stained glass, bell tower, and all — at the corner of Kimball and Wrightwood.
Prices begin at $300 for a group of six. Email Kristi at for more information.
Channel Your Inner Siren
We're talking mermaid tails and Ariel-style photo ops here! You and a minimum of 6 of your BFFs will learn how to glide and swoop through the water just like a mermaid at AquaMermaid (UIC Sports and Fitness Center 828 S Wolcott Ave). So if you're a water baby at heart, this is definitely the way to celebrate your upcoming nuptials. Note that, in true siren spirit, you have to be able to swim one lap (25 meters) without touching the bottom of the pool to participate.
Prices are $300 for seven mermaids over one hour of lessons, although extra hours and extra mermaids can be added.
