South Shore Beach

"I don't know what to do this weekend," you say. "I'm bored." Excuse me, but you should never have to say this when you're in Chicago. Take a look below at what's happening Friday through Sunday and you'll see why. Apologies for putting words in your mouth, but admit it, you've thought this once or twice...

Oz Park

If statues could talk, what would they say? That is the question at the heart of Statue Stories Chicago, a special new innovation in public art. This citywide arts project, which launched August 6, gives voice to Chicago's most important statues and sculptures, including Dorothy (above) and friends from "The Wizard of Oz" in Lincoln Park's Oz Park.

Not so long ago, dining around the Chicago River would have been considered a bit of an adventure, and perhaps for reasons other than the food. Today, dining along the river in the Loop has become a bit of a "must-do" for folks visiting the city.

Tony Mantuano's River Roast is one of these signature riverfront experience and since opening in 2014, it has garnered a host of accolades and praise. I recently stopped by for lunch and I'm pleased to say that the environment is hospitable and that the food (particularly if you like roasts of all persuasions) is quite good.

Known for being one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, Franz Kafka will be celebrated in a unique way in Chicago this week. Kafkapalooza, the First Floor Theater's third annual literary festival kicked off August 14, after previously hosting literary festivals celebrating the Brothers Grimm and Mark Twain.

It's one of the largest film and television studio campuses outside of Hollywood and the occasional home to blockbuster movies and televisions series. Located on the west side of downtown Chicago, Cinespace Chicago Film Studios occupies 1.45 million sq. ft. and specializes in the development, management and operation of studio facilities. Now you can step into the action and enjoy some behind-the-scenes fun at the first annual CineFest Backlot Block Party, August 28-30.

League of Chicago Theatres - Summer Showcase

Some of the best theater companies in town are about to make lunchtime a whole lot more interesting. And you don't need money or reservations to see the performances.

Artists from Barrel of Monkeys, The Hypocrites, Kokandy Productions, Sideshow Theatre Company and the Old Town School of Folk Music will perform free 45-minute shows at noon Aug. 14 and 28 at Water Works, 163 E. Pearson. The mini-shows are part of the League of Chicago Theatres Summer Showcase Series.
