An abandoned railway has been given new life on Chicago’s northwest side. The 606 is a 2.7-mile elevated park and trail that was built on what was once an industrial train line. Today, the popular trail features a chain of street-level parks, scenic look-out points, an observatory, and public art installations.

Officially called the Bloomingdale trail, the 606 gets its name from the common numbers in Chicago’s zip codes. The scenic path has multiple access points across four of Chicago’s hippest neighborhoods — Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square, and Humboldt Parkmaking it a favorite spot for local walkers, runners, bikers, and families. Bikes are available for rent from nearby Divvy stations, as part of the city’s bike-share program.

Exelon Observatory

This is the perfect spot for spectacular sunset views over the city. The observatory also hosts regular astronomy nights at The 606. 1801 N. Ridgeway Ave.,Logan Square

Julia de Burgos Park

This half-acre park is loved by kids. It features a climbing web, spider sculpture, and a long sitting wall decorated with nature themes, created by neighbors in a series of workshops led by the Chicago Public Art Group. Damen Arts Plaza

This outdoor expanse is the site of rotating public art exhibits, creating one of the city’s most unique urban art spaces. Damen & Bloomingdale, Bucktown

Park No. 567

This intimate park is most famous for The ConAgra Brands Mural by Jeff Zimmermann. The monumental mural, which adorns the side of coffeehouse-meets-cocktail-bar Ipsento 606, depicts a montage of beautiful faces and nature-inspired motifs.
