With IPW '14 less than a year away (April 5-9, 2014), Choose Chicago is in full swing planning this key event for Chicago's visitor industry. Committees have met and are actively crafting every aspect of the attendees' experience in Chicago. As host city, Chicago is responsible for:

  • Greeting attendees at O'Hare and Midway airports
  • Creating sightseeing tours on Saturday and Sunday (April 5-6)
  • Working with the State of Illinois to create Post Familiarization tours throughout the state and its surrounding states (April 10-13)
  • Transportation to/from airports, hotels, McCormick Place, sightseeing tours and evening events
  • Official Opening and Closing events on April 6 and 9, respectively
  • Host City booth at McCormick Place
  • Host City desks at all eight host hotels
  • A Dine-Around night featuring Chicago's signature restaurants
  • Media brunch and tours
  • Meetings and Incentives (MICE) event and tours
  • Volunteers to staff all of the above

We'll need the assistance of all of our partners to be successful, so be sure to look for more information as we move closer to IPW's arrival.

What brings businesses to this centrally located iconic destination? Why do people host their events here? That's the question isn't it?

When deciding on a new location for a 360 Destination office, Chicago seemed to be the perfect fit. The city is "a buzz" with everything new. Renovations at key hotels, new restaurants opening every day, and exciting new properties coming into town - we wanted to be here as well. A strong partnership with Choose Chicago is an integral part of our marketing strategy. Our success will largely be impacted by our ability to network with their team and partner on mutual client opportunities.

Our goal at 360 is to be the destination management market leader in terms of innovation and collaboration. Sure, leads on groups coming into town are great. But more importantly, we made a conscious decision to engage Choose Chicago and align with their objectives. How can we help their team accomplish their goals? How can we help sell more rooms? What can we do to help set this city apart and attract new clients?

Choose Chicago has been very open to this approach. They've given us time with their team to explain what we do, and why we're different. It's about adding value - value to them, value in what we do, and value to our joint customer. Choose Chicago has tremendous momentum in the marketplace - it only makes sense to align with their message and goals as an organization. As they succeed, we will too.

With an award-winning national footprint, 360 Destination Group is a Chicago full-service DMC. We have a depth of resources made up of industry leaders, and we're designed for today's marketplace. We listen and understand. We'll collaborate and customize. It's all about customers' objectives and why they've chosen this iconic city for its event.

Whether it's transportation, décor, or the unique venue that helps our customers accomplish their goals - we promise a culture of respect, responsiveness, creativity, professionalism and true partnership. That stands for both customers and industry colleagues alike. We'll work together to take Chicago's finest hotels, sights, sounds, and activities and turn them into memorable events.

In April, the U.S. Congress enacted legislation that eased Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) furloughs that were put in place due to the across the board budget cuts known as "the Sequester." Choose Chicago helped to raise awareness on this issue by attending U.S. Travel's annual lobby day known as Destination: Capitol Hill where we advocated for the travel industry directly to Chicago members of Congress. In addition, Choose Chicago staff has been setting up meetings with our local legislators when they are home in Chicago to voice our concerns about these ill thought out and damaging furloughs.

With this bill, the FAA is allowed to use up to $253 million from various accounts to avoid reduced staffing and operations through September 30. Sequestration forced the FAA to begin furloughs last month for 47,000 employees, leading to a significant amount of flight delays. Along with avoiding the furloughs, the new bill should also stop the closure of small airport towers. This will also keep the Midway airport tower operating 24 hours a day.

State Senator Kwame Raoul has advanced Senate Bill 1005 that could increase the prison term for anyone convicted of mob action crime cases by using electronic communication, including social media and text messaging. The legislation is partly in response to the recent occurrence of flash mobs on North Michigan Avenue that were orchestrated using social media sites. The bill passed the Senate without opposition and is being sponsored in the House by State Representative Christian Mitchell. Choose Chicago supports this bill and thanks Senator Raoul and Representative Mitchell for introducing it.
