The League of Chicago Theatres works to promote, support and advocate for Chicago's world-renowned theatres. Our goal is to make sure that every Chicagoan understands that attending great theatre is a birthright that belongs to all of us and that every visitor has the chance to experience all that is uniquely Chicago about our theatre scene.

Right now, the project we are most proud of is actually our partnership with Choose Chicago on Chicago Theatre Week. For the first time ever we are celebrating the incredible richness and variety of Chicago theatre and the extraordinary talent that takes the stage every night at more than 250 theatres throughout Chicagoland.  Chicago Theatre Week is this week! February 12 through 18 and tickets for 90 shows are either $15 or $30 - up to an 80% discount off regular prices.

We joined Choose Chicago a few years ago because we also operate Hot Tix, the half price theatre ticket website with two walk up booths - one in the loop and one on the Mag Mile.  We thought it was important to join because through these businesses we consider ourselves in the tourism industry and we think it's important to keep up with all the latest news on tourism and convention business in Chicago.  We also wanted Hot Tix to be included in marketing materials and we wanted the opportunity to let other members of Choose Chicago know how much theatre brings to our wonderful city. This year, Choose Chicago went above and beyond to further steward Arts and Culture tourism in Chicago and so Chicago Theatre Week was born!

You should participate in Choose Chicago programs for the networking and informational opportunities. I would encourage you to become an active participant and let both Choose Chicago staff and other members know how you can be a resource for them and learn how they can be a resource for you.   I am certain you will find direct benefits in no time.

We are very grateful for our partnership with Choose Chicago and find it invaluable for many reasons.  In a city with so much going on it can sometimes be difficult to be heard and Choose Chicago is one of the ways we find makes it easier.

Deb Clapp
Executive Director
League of Chicago Theatres

The networking begins Wednesday, February 27 with an evening reception and the Illinois Excellence in Tourism Awards dinner. It continues Thursday with the Silent Auction and Trade Show, and picks up again with the Illinois Tourism Reception at Rosemont's newly opened Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill. For the eighth time since hosting the inaugural event in 1998, the Big Ten Tournament returns to Chicago. From March 13-17, 2013, Chicago will be buzzing with the energy and excitement of over 300,000 Big Ten alumni and fans. The Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament is a massive event and an excellent opportunity to showcase Chicago in the national spotlight.

An event of this magnitude has a profound effect on Chicago's economy. To make this tournament the best one yet, it will take an active and supportive effort from the local communities and our partner organizations. Here are six ways you or your organization can contribute to the success of the 2013 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament.

Ticket Packages: Purchase a ticket package to the tournament, which includes tickets to the Tip Off Luncheon and VIP/Alumni Party. To purchase tickets, click here.

Signage/Décor: Leading up to and during the tournament hotels and restaurants, as well as Midway and O'Hare airports and various city streets will be displaying Big Ten signage. We encourage you to join in - help showcase our pride and excitement about hosting the tournament by purchasing Big Ten signage and décor! To order signage, click here.

Tip-Off Luncheon: Wednesday, March 13 from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Intercontinental Hotel, 505 N Michigan Ave. The luncheon will serve as the official kick-off to the Tournament with special guest speakers, including Big Ten Conference Commissioner, Jim Delaney. To purchase tickets, click here.

Volunteer: If you are interested in volunteering at the tournament, click here and register today! Please note, spots are limited and based on availability. As a token of our appreciation, if you are selected to be a volunteer you will receive a free shirt and two tickets to the official Big Ten Alumni Party on Saturday March 16.

Books for Baskets Challenge - Donate a Book: World Sport Chicago, the Big Ten Conference and the Chicago Sports Commission are calling all Big Ten university alumni to join in support of over 35 Chicago elementary schools and hundreds of students through the Books for Baskets Challenge.

The Books for Baskets Challenge gives you the opportunity to back your own Big Ten alumni association as they compete to become the university that donates the most books in support of youth education.

Donations to the Books for Baskets Challenge are tax-deductible and your entire donation will be used to purchase new books for participating schools. All books will be health and wellness themed, encouraging these students to live healthy, active lives and enjoy the positive impact of sports.

For further information regarding the tournament, tickets and ancillary events, please visit or contact the Chicago Sports Commission or by phone at (312) 567-8470.

In January members of Choose Chicago's Public Policy, Marketing and Client Services teams met with Congressman Mike Quigley to discuss current issues that affect Chicago's tourism industry. Congressman Quigley is a longtime proponent and powerful federal ally of the travel industry. A founding member of the US Congress' Tourism Caucus, Quigley was recently named as a member of the very important House Appropriations Committee, the committee charged with crafting a budget and setting expenditure priorities for the US government.

The Congressman was receptive to Choose Chicago's goals and was supportive of resolving the imperative issue of improving the speed and tenor of the US Customs experience at Chicago's airports. This is an industry-wide problem. Making the customs experience easier and more pleasant for visitors from outside the US is key to achieving Choose Chicago's goal of making Chicago one of the top five US destinations for international visitors.

Congressman Quigley expressed his concern that if sequestration is put into place air controllers, TSA and Customs Agents are at a major risk of cutbacks.  Sequestration, more commonly referred to as the fiscal cliff, is a process in which both defense and non-defense discretionary spending can be reduced by automatic cuts. Sequestration is currently set to happen in March 2013 (delayed from January 1, 2013 as part of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012).

We also discussed the Jobs Originated Through Launching Travel (JOLT) Act that Congressman Quigley is sponsoring and the broader issue of Visa Waiver reform. Success in adding Brazil, China and Poland to the list of Visa Waiver countries is a top goal of our industry. The recent granting of this status to Taiwan is already paying dividends in new travel to the US from this country. In addition, we discussed continued support for Brand USA, America's campaign to the world encouraging inbound U.S. travel.

Members of our Public Policy department will travel in April to Washington, DC to work with our fellow destination marketing organizations (DMOs) to lobby Congress on issues that impact the travel industry. We will bring issues that can affect you and your business straight to the doors of decision makers on Capitol Hill. Soon we will have more information about how you can help us with this effort right here at home.

On another, but just as important front, on March 6 we will be in Springfield to lobby our state officials. We need your help in this effort!  Choose Chicago is joining the Illinois Council of Convention & Visitor Bureaus (ICCVB), the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association (IHLA), and the Illinois Restaurant Association (IRA) for a Hospitality Industry Lobby Day. We encourage you to join your fellow industry members in an important grassroots lobbying effort with members of the Illinois General Assembly and the Quinn Administration. If you are interested in joining us or wish for more information on the Hospitality Industry Lobby Day in Springfield, please contact us at

You can follow the Choose Chicago Public Policy team on Twitter @CCAdvocacy and sign up to be one of our first responders to get all the breaking news that affects the travel industry.

Join us for our March 12 marketing workshop to learn about our current initiatives and opportunities designed to expand your marketing reach. Representatives from Choose Chicago and our marketing partner companies will be available to educate your organization about how to get the best return on your partner investment. A valuable component of your Choose Chicago partnership is the exclusive opportunity to display collateral material at McCormick Place and our Visitor Information Centers, which--when combined--welcome more than two million people per year. Prominently located near shopping, dining and attractions, our Visitor Information Centers are a highly trafficked resource for people visiting Chicago. To ensure a welcoming environment for Chicago visitors, we've established guidelines and policies for displaying promotional materials:

  • Must be a partner of Choose Chicago to display your collateral in our Visitor Information Centers.
  • Only one space per business shall be allowed at each of the Visitor Information Centers; additional space is available for a fee.
  • Collateral must be free to the public.
  • Due to space restrictions, the Visitor Services staff will allocate and designate rack space for the collateral to ensure visibility and accessibility to the public.
  • Collateral must promote tourism, visitor needs and pertain to information about Chicago and the Chicago Metropolitan area which includes; cultural destinations, heritage corridors, neighborhoods, attractions, museums, events, maps, accommodations and points of interest for visitors.
  • Discounts and coupons are accepted, as long as they are within the size requirements. All coupons and discounts must contain an expiration date and must be honored as printed.
  • The supplier must ship or drop off brochures to both Visitor Information Centers separately.

If you are interested in participating in our Collateral Distribution Program or have questions, please contact Cintia Ortiz, Manager of Visitor Services at 312 945-4233 or
