The Chicago Botanic Garden opened more than 50 years ago as a beautiful place to visit and has matured into a world-renowned living museum that harnesses the power of plants to improve peoples lives and grow a better world. In addition to being a place for horticulture and beauty, the Garden leads pioneering plant conservation research at the Negaunee Institute, offers lifelong learning opportunities at the Regenstein School, and builds healthier communities through urban agriculture at Windy City Harvest. One of the treasures of the Forest Preserves of Cook County, the main campus is a 385-acre living plant museum featuring 28 distinct gardens and four natural areas. Additionally, with the recent addition of the Obama Presidential Center, the Garden has 11 urban farms in the greater Chicago area. Every year, more than one million people visit the Garden, making it one of the most visited public gardens in the United States. The Garden is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and a member of the American Public Gardens Association. The Garden is run as a public/private partnership with the Forest Preserves of Cook County.
