The intimate, 251-seat Abelson Auditorium is the home to Court Theatre. Founded at the University of Chicago in 1955, the professional theatre remains in residence on this stunning campus in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Court Theatre is strongly connected to the rich, cultural landscape within this community and is the largest performing arts organization on the Chicago's South Side.

See the rigorous exploration of dramatic texts, including the African-American canon and musical theatre works, during the 62nd Season!

November 10 - December 11, 2016

  • The story: A tale of love, murder, and justice during the time of the Trojan War. Can Electra and her brother avenge her father's death and retake his throne from their treacherous mother? 
  • The background: Directed by Seret Scott and starring Sandra Marquez, Micheal Pogue and Kate Fry, Electra is the third and final installment Court Theatre's Greek Cycle. 

Blues for an Alabama Sky
January 12 - February 12, 2017

  • The story: Up-and-coming artists Angel and Guy dream big but face harsh realities during the Great Depression. These Harlem Renaissance men's lives are changed when the move next door to Delia, the social worker trying to open a family planning clinic. 
  • The background: Tackling modern problems in a historical 1920s New York, playwright Pearl Cleage brings the fruits of the Harlem Renaissance to life on the Chicago stage. 

The Hard Problem
March 9 - April 9, 2016

  • The story: Faced with the dilemma, where does science end and the individual begin? Psychologist for the Krohl Institute for Brain science, Hilary, struggles with her research and understanding the future for psychology. 
  • The background: Court Theatre is thrilled to deepen its relationship with award-winning playwright Tom Stoppard as he delivers another hit to the Chicago stage.
