The Posthumous Trial of Giulia Tofana
Murderer, poisoner, witch . That’s how history remembers Giulia Tofana, Italy’s most prolific serial killer and the infamous creator of the Aqua Tofana poison. Authorities claimed she was responsible for the death of over 600 men.
But is that right? Was she a serial killer? Or was she a savior for women trapped in violent marriages? A woman who knew the fallout of domestic violence and did what she could to save women from that fate? 400 years after her death in 1659 at the hands of the Papal Authorities, the audience meets Giulia in Purgatory as she faces damnation, considers her life, and just wants to eat some bread.
The Posthumous Trial of Giulia Tofana is a one-woman drama that asks: When is murder justified? Who is allowed to determine that justice? And can Giulia meet her daughter in paradise?
