Project Cinema November 19, 2026
Project Cinema, an ongoing film series presented at the National Public Housing Museum, returns with a free screening of Attack the Block, preceded by short documentaries about public housing in London.
Public housing sites are frequently seen as frightening locations in the popular imagination. Filmmakers have used them as settings of terror and their residents as fearsome antagonists. But what happens when this convention is turned on its head? Join us for a wild and unpredictable adventure through south London’s council estates in Joe Cornish’s film horror/comedy, Attack the Block (2011, Rated R).
This screening provides context into the history of public housing in England, which shares many similarities with our own in the USA. This feature and the accompanying short films (A Portrait of Central Hill, The Winstanley Plays Itself, and Matryoshka Living) provide us with a view into the way another country has handled its own housing crises and gives us a mirror for how we can also understand our own.
