Memphis the Musical is a high-energy Broadway musical featuring music by David Bryan and a book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro. Set in the underground clubs and radio stations of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, the production captures the excitement surrounding the birth of rock ’n’ roll and the cultural shift created through music during a segregated era.
Loosely inspired by the life of legendary DJ Dewey Phillips, one of the first white radio personalities to introduce Black music to mainstream audiences, the musical blends rock ’n’ roll, gospel, rhythm & blues, and soul into an electrifying theatrical experience filled with powerhouse vocals and dynamic choreography.
Originally premiering on Broadway in 2009, Memphis ran through 2012 and received critical acclaim, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
