First-time visitors are always amazed by Chicago's offerings. Step inside a fascinating museum, a first-class theater or an innovative restaurant. Venture outside to see fabulous architecture, popular attractions and Millennium Park.

Cloud Gate Millennium Park

❏ Go to Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate (also known as "The Bean") early. It's the best time to snap that perfect photo.

❏ Fill up on eggs, pancakes and other breakfast fare at Lou Mitchell's, a Chicago institution for more than 85 years, where lines usually roll out the door. To ease the wait, guys are given doughnut holes and ladies get Milk Duds.

❏ Visit Skydeck Chicago in Willis Tower and view the city from a dazzling 1,353 feet. If you're brave enough, venture out onto The Ledge, glass boxes that extend 4.3 feet from the Skydeck.

❏ Lunch at the clubby Seven Lions and enjoy a crispy Muffaletta with eggplant.

❏ Then, cross the street and spend the rest of the day at the Art Institute of Chicago. View the extensive collection of Impressionist paintings. For contemporary art, peruse the Modern Wing, where you can step onto the terrace for wonderful  city views.

❏ For dinner, take in the upscale ambiance at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse, serving succulent steaks and generously sized portions.

❏ Spend the evening at a classic or contemporary play at the Tony-award-winning Goodman Theatre.

❏ End the night with a craft beer at Kaiser Tiger or a boozy tiki concoction at Three Dots and a Dash.

❏ Rest your head at the opulent, historic  hotel Palmer House® A Hilton Hotel.

The Field Museum

❏ Have a healthy breakfast and freshly squeezed juice at Beatrix, and then visit the Museum Campus where three of Chicago's most famous museums sit side by side.

❏ Study Sue the ginormous T. rex, and wander over to the mummies and other artifacts at The Field Museum.

❏ See stars and a restored  Gemini 12 at the Adler Planetarium. So technologically advanced is the Grainger Sky Theater, you'll think you are flying through the universe.

❏ Meet 32,000 new friends at the Shedd Aquarium where dolphins dance, stingrays glide by and belugas grin.

❏ Hungry for a late lunch? Grab a prosciutto-wrapped chicken panini later in the afternoon at Labriola and spend the rest of the day people-watching and shopping The Magnificent Mile.

❏ Dine at award-winning Blackbird where the décor is minimalist and the entrees are creative.

❏ End the evening with some fine blues at Buddy Guy's Legends.

  1. PIZZERIA UNO: Chicago's famous deep-dish pizza was born here in 1943.
  2. GIORDANO'S: The stuffed pizza here is even thicker than deep-dish.
  3. GINO'S EAST: This spot became an instant legend with locals, national celebrities and visitors from around the world.
  4. LOU MALNATI'S: Deep-dish or thin, you can't go wrong with the buttery crust.
  5. PEQUOD'S PIZZA: They started a cult following for their pan-style pizza with a "carmelized crust" edge.
