Third Coast Percussion performs Since Time Began
Chicago’s own GRAMMY winner, classical percussion ensemble Third Coast Percussion, will present a Chicago premiere performance Since Time Began in celebration of 400th anniversary of the Zildjian cymbals for one night only, December 5, at 7:30 pm at DePaul University School of Music | Holtschneider Performance Center.
The Zildjian company is the world’s leading brand for cymbals. It makes the cymbals you see on almost every drum kit! With its cymbals first launched for the Ottoman army band under Sultan Mustafa during the Baroque period, Zildjian— meaning “son of cymbal maker”—are now used by classical, rock, jazz musicians and beyond on main stages all across the world. The ensemble will perform with an arsenal of 32 Zildjian cymbals of all sizes and tones on stage, in this epic 40-minute new work that represents the 4 centuries of the iconic brand!
With nearly two decades of spellbinding performances to its name, Third Coast Percussion is the first percussion ensemble to win a GRAMMY® Award (2017). First met in 2005 at Northwestern University as percussion students, the ensemble now performs this piece that’s written by their mentor from Northwestern—esteemed percussion master Michael Burritt. The concert title “Since Time Began” carries the double meaning of the beginning of the cymbals brand and of the ensemble, making this performance a full circle moment and an amazing story to tell.
