THE EVANSTON ART CENTER (EAC) ANNOUNCES SWIMMERS BY BARBARA CURTIS

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to Swimmers.

The exhibition is of water as an immediate sensation, with people working through its surface and depths: light refracting far and near, people living and defining themselves within this buoyant relationship. Curtis has made attempts at abstraction, helped along by the bending and moving water surface embracing the human form. This remains a statement dedicated to the independence and survival of the human being.

Barbara Curtis, of Urbana, Illinois, has engaged in and studied art all her life, earning a master’s degree in art from Eastern Illinois University in 2021. She has lived in New Mexico, San Francisco, Aix-En-Provence France, and has studied and shown in those areas.

In her own words, “I have chosen to be a figurative artist and to paint subjects from real life because I was always surrounded by figurative art. Life has taught me to translate my visual experience into a subjective one. I express myself through reading the natural elements around me and then understanding how to translate my sensibilities to my viewers. My wish is that people who view my paintings will come to see what I am, what I feel, and relate to me, and perhaps be inspired or transported.”

Swimmers will be exhibited in the Second Floor Atrium Gallery of the Art Center. The opening reception is free and open to the public. This exhibition is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the EAC’s general membership.

Evanston Art Center, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization, is dedicated to fostering the appreciation and expression of the arts among diverse audiences.
