Chicago Breweries Map and Craft Beer Itinerary

Tree-lined residential streets and charming former industrial buildings are the picturesque backdrop in this North Side neighborhood. It’s a historically German area built on warm welcomes and cozy gathering places — exactly what the new rush of brew houses here stake their claim on.

STOP 1 // Half Acre Beer Company :  Chat over a Daisy Cutter

Grab a burrito with that beer (did you know they’re the perfect duo?) in the rustic-chic Half Acre Beer Company. Its Daisy Cutter pale ale is a cult fave nationwide, so there’s a special honor enjoying in its sweet home, Chicago. Raise a glass at one of the taproom’s communal tables and meet new friends.

STOP 2 // Carl Sandburg's Former Home :  History Break

Stroll over to Carl Sandburg’s former home, a quaint wood-frame abode that was home to the famous writer in 1912. Snap some pics and honor Chicago’s literary history.

STOP 3 // Begyle Brewing Company :  Experience a Grassroots Effort

Start your Ravenswood beer trek at Chicago’s first community-supported brewery, Bergyle Brewing Company (it’s owned by member shareholders). There’s a retail store and tours every Saturday at noon, which includes three pours (try the Blonde Ale) and a souvenir tulip glass.

STOP 4 // Dovetail Brewing :  Go Euro for a Mo'

Order a beer flight and a Dinkel’s pretzel and fancy yourself in Continental Europe at Dovetail Brewing. Hefeweizen is just the start of the Euro-inspired quaffs up for grabs at this rustic spot where you’ll want to return to again and again (bring your dog!).

STOP 5 // Lillstreet Art Center :  Art Escape

Break at Lillstreet Art Center, featuring a gift shop and craft gallery open daily. It’s a taste of what the artists produce in its multi-level studio spaces — a range of fiber arts, sculpture, painting and more.

STOP 6 // Spiteful Brewing :  Check Out a Small Sensation

It’s tiny but mighty. Spiteful Brewing prides itself on being a a nano brewery which hand-delivers a few kegs at a time to local bars and restaurants.

STOP 7 // Band of Bohemia :  Try Something Boho

A vibrant mix of textiles, flavors and colors come together at Band of Bohemia. The dining room is beautiful but you can’t go wrong with a seat at the bar drinking spice-infused beer (the guava-pink peppercorn beer is a can’t-miss) and digging into duck confit.

STOP 8 // Empirical Brewing Company :  Dare to Experiment

In addition to the popular favorites, Empirical Brewing Company introduces one new “experimental” beer every week. Using a scientific approach and what they call “empirical observations” they introduce a continually changing beer lineup (recently there was a Down Quark Session Black IPA with Raspberries). The decor is industrial; the mood is uplifting and social. Bonus: food trucks on the weekends.

Transportation tip: CTA Brown Line 'L' train
