Chicago is a theater town — especially when it's holiday time. The city's major theaters are drawing in audiences to experience annual traditions, big productions and one-of-a-kind collaborations.

Here are just a few to choose from.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

November 18 - December 31, 2017
Goodman Theatre: 170 N. Dearborn St.

Now in its 40th anniversary year, see Dickens' timeless Christmas morality tale come to life. Experience the electrifying arrival of ghosts, jubilant musical numbers, all the "Bah Humbugs" you can imagine, and Scrooge's joyful discovery of life and love.

Grab a bite: Our recommendation? Petterino's. It's located right next door and is rich in Chicago theater history. Its Italian-inspired food, cocktail and wine menu is show-stopping too.

KEN LUDWIG'S 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

November 10 – December 31, 2017
Broadway Playhouse: 175 E. Chestnut St.

Broadway In Chicago and Emerald City Theatre present this hilarious take on the classic holiday poem at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place.

Grab a bite: Mity Nice Bar & Grill is a Lettuce Entertain You eatery located right in Water Tower Place. It offers all the bar food staples, with a little bit extra. Think brie & gala apple flatbread and peppercorn-crusted burger with crispy onions and blue cheese.

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: LIVE IN CHICAGO!

November 16 , 2017 - January 6, 2018
Stage 773: 1225 W. Belmont Ave.

For 16 years, the award-winning American Blues Theater has treated Chicago audiences to a live 1940s radio broadcast. This incredible cast of eight recreates the entire town of Bedford Falls with Foley sound effects, an original score, and holiday carols. It's a Chicago original based on the beloved film by Frank Capra. After each performance, join the cast for milk and cookies.

Grab a bite: Lakeview is bursting with great eateries. But just across the street is Fahlstrom's Fresh Fish Market, offering seafood delights such as Sea Scallop Sliders and Belmont Harbor Seafood Gumbo.

IRVING BERLIN'S WHITE CHRISTMAS

November 21 - December 3, 2017
Cadillac Palace Theatre: 151 W. Randolph St.

This lavish holiday classic about a song-and-dance team putting on a holiday show at a magical Vermont inn features unforgettable tunes by Irving Berlin, glorious dancing and singing, and lots of snow!

Grab a bite: "Genuine food. Craft beer. Elevated cocktails. Fine wine." That's what defines Randolph Tavern, right across the street from the theater. Judging by the Super Food Hummus and Bourbon Meatballs, they're true to their word.

THE NUTCRACKER

December 1 - 30, 2017
Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University: 50 E. Congress Pkwy.

Journey inside Chicago's 1893 World's Fair in this boldly reimagined version of The Nutcracker ballet. Get swept up by the grand production, lilting music and gorgeous sets and costumes.

Grab a bite: Only a few blocks away on Michigan Avenue, you'll find a culinary haven at Seven Lions. Both warm and chic, this spacious eatery offers an elevated take on classic American cuisine, as well as a three-course pre-theater menu.

CHRISTMAS DOUBLE FEATURE & SING-A-LONG

December 9-24, 2017
Music Box Theatre: 3733 N Southport Ave.

Each year, Santa welcomes the audience and, accompanied by Music Box organist Dennis Scott, leads them in singing cherished Christmas carols. This year's double feature: White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life

Grab a bite: Just two blocks south you'll find The Butcher's Tap, offering a packed menu of American classic fare, such as a Lemon Chicken Club, the spicy Abyss Burger and Drunken Cheese Curds.
