Winter is the perfect time of year to cozy up with some of your favorite comfort foods, and Chicago is never in short supply of some of the best dishes, from gooey mac ‘n cheese to indulgent chicken pot pie. If you're in the mood for something warm and delightful, take a moment to check out some of these Chicago restaurants for some truly great comfort food.

For Mac and Cheese...

Head north to Andersonville, home of Lady Gregory's and its delicious Lobster Mac and Cheese. Baked, cheesy noodles with buttery chunks of lobster, truffle cream sauce topped with a crunchy cornbread crust. Yum.

For Chili...

Stop by the Green Door Tavern for a cup or bowl of their famous, old-fashioned chili. It's served with a side of kidney beans, red onions, jalapenos and garlic bread. Lindy's Chili is a local favorite and has been serving up heaping bowls of chili since 1924. You can order a traditional bowl with or without beans, or have it served over pasta, nachos or fries.

At Rockit Bar & Grill, chili is a staple of the menu. And every year this place hosts a Chilifest featuring some unique, spicy and down-right-delicious recipes. Or head over to R.J. Grunts for a bowl of their "famous" chili. Honored as Chicago's best chili in 1979, this classic tastes as good as it did over 30 years ago. Why mess with the best?

For Grilled Cheese...

It's got to be Cheesie's Pub & Grub. You could easily order the original sandwich, made with American and Merkt's Cheddar melted on Texas toast. Or you could be adventurous and try one of the many twists on this classic comfort food. The Napoleon features cheddar, bleu cheese crumbles, tater tots, bacon and hot sauce; while The Popper is made with cheddar, cream cheese, cheddar cheese sauce, fresh jalapeno slices and bacon on sourdough bread. Enjoy any of these sandwiches with a steaming hot bowl of tomato soup, perfect for dipping.

For Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes...

Opt for a place that puts its specialty right in its name. Honey Butter Fried Chickenserves up traditional pieces of fried chicken with its signature honey butter and a corn muffin. You can also get a side of grits or schmaltz smashed potatoes with chicken fat gravy. Talk about stick-to-your-ribs deliciousness.

Inspired by the richness of Southern cooking, Big Jones serves up delicious fried chicken for lunch and dinner. You can get it a la carte with seasoned cornmeal dredge and served with a biscuit and homemade jam or as a sandwich with mayonnaise and lettuce on a soft egg bun.

For Chicken Pot Pie...

For that perfect mixture of meat, gravy and vegetables topped with a flaky pastry crust, head to Tavern at the Park. Their chicken pot pie is a customer favorite, with braised chicken, seasoned vegetables and madeira wine sauce.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous, head to Tortoise Supper Club and try their signature wild pheasant pie, with slow-roasted shredded pheasant and root vegetables garnished with crispy skin and a foie gras cognac sauce. Yum.

For Something Sweet...

You have to stop at Ann Sather for a famous cinnamon roll. These hot, gooey, soft buns of soothing goodness are loaded with icing and nearly impossible to resist. Hot Chocolate features a plethora of baked goods, as well as a decadent dessert menu that includes dishes like chocolate "souffled" tart with salted caramel ice cream and house made pretzels. Round out the treat with a warm mug of, what else, hot chocolate, available in a variety of flavors and served with house-made marshmallows.

There are many other great places around Chicago where you can dive into some comfort food. Search the various dining options and get eating.
