Based on your feedback and user experience, we have launched an improved Reports section of the Choose Chicago Extranet. The reports, consolidated into one access point, are now real time with greater flexibility and more user options. Hotel Hot Dates

Choose Chicago will be adding Hotel Hot Dates functionality within the Partner Extranet in mid-September.  Hotel Hot Dates will enable Choose Chicago's hotel partners to enter promotional rates for group meetings offered during specific time periods simply by logging into the Extranet. The Hot Dates information will help Choose Chicago assist in getting the word out to those coming to Chicago during that time.

Hotel Lead Retrieval

Also set to launch in September is our Hotel Lead Retrieval system. This system allows hotels to view and respond to all leads, edit responses, and be included on all communications related to leads simply by logging onto Choose Chicago's Partner Extranet.

Choose Chicago will work closely with all hotel partners to ensure that the transition to Hotel Hot Dates and Hotel Lead Retrieval is communicated effectively and is user-friendly. Learn more about the new lead system and its September launch in future communications and webinars.

35th Annual Les Clefs d' Or National Congress Meets in Chicago this September

For the first time since 1991, Les Clefs d'Or USA, the nation's premier hotel concierges of the hospitality community, will be celebrating their 35th Annual Les Clefs d'Or National Congress from September 1 to September 4, 2013 at the Sheraton Chicago.  We asked Kathy McClanathan Chef Concierge at The Talbott Hotel Chicago and Conference Chair, to share some of her thoughts on hosting this event and on serving the needs of our visitors. Together with her planning committee, they have spent the past two and a half years putting the Congress together and in less than 60 days will see all of their hard work pay off as more than 300 attendees arrive in Chicago.

History of Les Clefs d'Or USA and Chicago

Les Clefs d'Or concierges are considered the best of the best, and can be recognized by guests who see the gold keys proudly displayed on their uniforms. This organization is comprised of over 4,000 members worldwide and has 650 US members.

Chicago's history with this organization goes back to 1978. Admission to this organization requires numerous steps, applications, sponsors, test taking and recommendations before one is accepted. In that year in Vienna, Austria, one of the first female concierges, Ahlyce Kaplan of Chicago, was admitted in the inaugural group of US concierges recognized as Les Clefs d'Or members. In 1991, the last time Chicago hosted the US group, Marjorie Silverman from the Intercontinental Hotel Chicago was the first female International Les Clefs d'Or President.

Hosting Les Clefs d'Or USA in 2013

Chicago is playing host to this Congress for the first time since 1991 and we are thrilled to show off our beautiful city. We have plans for attendees to go on an architectural river cruise, attend a taping of Windy City Live, explore Chicago's literary past, enjoy neighborhood shopping tours, host a dine around and compete in a cooking contest with foods that were first introduced at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.

Of course, there is a serious side to the meeting as well and education is a very important part of this Congress. This year in Chicago, there is a strong focus on taking a deeper dive into social media and its importance in assisting visitors prior to and during their visit. Concierges help visitors in so many ways that contribute to their experiences in our destinations, and it is critical that we be experts at sharing information in ways that make sense for travelers. Choose Chicago has been extremely helpful in listening to our needs and helping us identify some next steps in this area.

The Congress is an opportunity for our members to connect and discuss what we can do to improve our desks, and to promote more tourism for each of our cities. We know the value of our work and believe that it delivers a very special part of the hotel guest experience.

A Few Words on Chicago

I love Chicago for so many reasons, and it is an easy sell. Visitors are impressed by our friendliness, and they often remark about how clean it is and how easy it is to get around. Telling guests what to see and do makes me happy, even if I am talking to a Green Bay Packers fan!

Choose Chicago is helping us to as we continue to move forward in serving our guests, and we look forward to working with them on finding new ways to assist visitors. We are thrilled to be ambassadors for Chicago, to work with our destination marketing organization, and to enlighten people about our city.

Donate to Les Clefs d'Or USA's Sweet Home Chicago Gala

As part of their congress they will be hosting a "Sweet Home Chicago" gala for their attendees benefiting the Share Your Soles charity, a Chicago based organization that provides shoes to third world countries as well as to disaster areas in the USA. As part of their gala, they are hoping to create a memorable experience by including some "Golden Tickets" in gift bags at random for the attendees. These golden tickets will be gift certificates for the attendees to use to indulge in some of Chicago's finest tours and attractions, shopping or dining experiences. If your organization is interested in donating a gift certificate or experience to this special group of hospitality professionals, please contact Kathy McClanathan at The deadline for donations is August 27, 2013.

The deadline for inclusion in the next Meeting Professionals Guide (MPG) is September 20. The MPG is the ultimate resource for meeting and event planners, and an important platform for any organization that benefits from business and leisure visitation to Chicago. This publication provides key information on meeting and convention facilities, suppliers and more. The guide is distributed via direct mail to top meeting planners and it's the exclusive publication used by Choose Chicago convention sales and service staff.

On July 12, Choose Chicago President & CEO Don Welsh spoke at the christening of Shoreline Sightseeing's newest vessel, the Riverview.

Shoreline Sightseeing

"In 2009, we hit the low point in terms of tourist business - we had 39 million visitors," Welsh said at the ceremony, "I'm pleased to say in 2012 that number rose back to 46.2 million. And as you start thinking about the assets that we have as a city, this river and our water is something we tell the world about."

The Riverview, a 280-seat passenger barge, and its accompanying tugboat were acquired by Shoreline this summer to accommodate a growing number of tourists visiting the city. Congratulations to Shoreline on their new, beautiful boat.

Welcome Our New Partners

Join us in welcoming our newest partners to Choose Chicago:

The Choose Chicago Public Policy team has been diligently working to gather co-sponsors in support of H.R. 1354 or the Jobs Originated Through Launching Travel (JOLT) Act and recently secured the co-sponsorship of Congressman Danny Davis. Introduced by Congressman Mike Quigley, the JOLT Act would increase international visitation to the United States by expanding the Visa Waiver Program to US allies such as Poland and Brazil. It would also facilitate the use of videoconferencing for visa interviews.

In addition to Congressman Davis, the Public Policy team was instrumental in gaining the co-sponsorships of Representatives Roskam, Schakowsky, Schock and Lipinski. Illinois currently has seven co-sponsors on the bill, tied for the most with Florida. The Public Policy team has also been working closely with Congressman Quigley's office to gather more support and raise awareness.

If passed, the JOLT Act would increase international visitation to the United States by 600,000 people which would generate $7 billion in spending and create 40,000 American jobs. It's a key legislation for us as we look to move up the rankings in international visitation.

If you would like to receive more information on upcoming events, industry issues and action alerts from the Public Policy team please join our First Responder Partner Advocacy Program, e-mail us at or fill out our form on the Partner Advocacy section of our website.  You can follow us on Twitter at @CCAdvocacy where we promote Chicago while giving you the quickest and most recent public policy related travel news, statistics and facts.
