BATALI'S EATALY TO OPEN
Eataly, the massive food emporium that has gained success in New York, Italy and Japan, is scheduled to open its second U.S. location in Chicago in November. The 63,000-square-foot, two-story space will house eight Italian-themed restaurants, along with fresh produce, seafood, meats and cheeses, prepard foods, an in-house brewery, wine and cocktail bars, and specialty items. Eataly is located in the bustling River North neighborhood on East Ohio Street.
4G WIRELESS SERVICE COMING TO CHICAGO SUBWAYS
Chicago plans to upgrade the wireless service in its subways. Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and CTA President Forrest Claypool announced that 4G service will be available in the 12 miles of underground train lines. The current network is a first generation service that was installed back in 2005. Construction could begin as early as mid-2014, the CTA said.
NEW HOSTEL ANNOUNCED FOR RIVER NORTH
Chicago's River North neighborhood will welcome a new hostel in the building that once housed the Tokyo Hotel at 17-19 E. Ohio St. A venture led by Sydell Group Ltd. plans to open one of its Freehand hostels, which will have about 250 beds, split between private rooms and dormitory-style suites with four or eight beds. Guests will have access to a kitchen and lounge, and a bar called Broken Shaker will open in the lobby area. Development of the hostel is expected to take about 18 months.
FAIRWAYS TO TEE OFF IN LINCOLN PARK
A new sports bar concept is popping up in Lincoln Park. Fairways will allow guests to play a virtual round of golf in one of four simulators, while also dining on contemporary American fare and sipping craft beer, wine and cocktails. Opening on Armitage Avenue, Fairways will feature a 150-seat restaurant on the first floor, and virtual golf simulators on the second level. Golfers will use real clubs and balls, which will be supplied by Fairways. The upstairs will also offer drink service and is available for rent by the hour. Sidewalk seating and a rooftop herb garden will be open in the spring.
