ACCOMMODATIONS

Located in the heart of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, the new Home2 Suites by Hilton Chicago River Northis the ideal home base for any business or leisure trip, and opened March 19, 2019. This all-suite extended stay hotel also has a fitness center, laundry facilities and Oasis lounge with a 24-hour business services area and 24-hour market.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago – Magnificent Milehas completed a multi-million dollar renovation and as part of the renovation, installed the first Five Feet to Fitness Roomsin the Midwest. Hilton’s in-room wellness concept brings over eleven different fitness equipment and accessory options into the hotel room. The new room category makes it more convenient than ever for road warriors, exercise enthusiasts, and those who prefer to workout in private to maintain their routines while staying with Hilton. Rooms opened for booking on April 1, 2019.

Following a $240 million restoration, Chicago’s Essex Inn, which first opened in 1961, reopened as Hotel Essex Chicago, a luxury lifestyle hotel, on April 1, 2019. With a classic name that denotes a definitive homage to traditional ideas of quality service and hospitality, Hotel Essex puts its own modern spin on these conventions. As part of a unique, mixed-use complex in Chicago’s eclectic South Loop neighborhood, the hotel captures the spirit and diversity of this burgeoning community like no one else. With its superb Michigan Avenue location and the energetic vibe created by its singular nightlife venue S|X, Hotel Essex brings a revitalized sophistication to the South Loop that is all its own.

The Hoxton Chicagois located in the city’s West Loop/Fulton Market area, a dynamic neighborhood that is home to the city’s exciting food and drink scene. Set in a newly built property on a site once occupied by an auto mechanic and meatpacker, The Hoxton Chicago is the brand’s seventh property and the third hotel in the United States. The 182 bedrooms, designed by Ennismore Design Studio, draw reference from the area’s industrial past with concrete ceilings and warehouse -style windows, while mid-century furniture gives a homely vibe, alongside custom-designed rugs and locally-sourced artwork. The lively communal areas offers comfortable seating and a welcoming open-door policy, with food and drink available all day. The hotel opened in early April 2019.

21c Museum Hotel Chicago, set to open in Fall 2019, is combines 297-room boutique hotel, multi-venue contemporary art museum and an independently branded, chef-driven restaurant in downtown Chicago. Building on the founders’ mission to bring contemporary art to the public through innovative exhibitions and programming that integrates art into daily life, 21c Museum Hotel Chicago will feature over 10,000 sq. ft. of exhibition, meeting and event space showcasing rotating curated exhibitions, interactive site-specific art installations and a roster of cultural programming based on collaborations with local and national arts organizations. Welcoming local residents and visitors alike, the museum will be open to the public free of charge, 365 days a year. The property will also feature a unique, chef-driven food and beverage concept, full-service spa, business center and fitness center.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is transforming Chicago’s old Cook County Hospital into a dual-branded Hyatt House Hotel/ Hyatt Place, accompanied by medical office space and retail. The 14-story, 167,000 sq. ft., 200-room development will be the first hotel in the Fulton Market district to cater to extended-stay corporate travelers. Amenities will include an indoor pool, green roof, fitness center, bar and lounge. The hotels are slated to open in 2019 and 2020.

Hyatt Hotelsis working on a new hotel in the West Loop set to open in 2020 across the street from the new McDonald’s headquarters. The 53-story office tower is currently under construction and will have 220 guest rooms, two levels of parking, a fourth floor sky lobby, a guest amenity level, and ground floor retail space.

Jewelers Building Hotel,a 39-room boutique hotel is planned for the historic Jewelers Building on Jewelers Row in the Loop. The 137-year-old building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a city landmark. Completed in 1882, the Jewelers Building is the only example of the early work of famed Chicago architecture firm Adler & Sullivan left in the Loop. The facade will be preserved as much as possible, with soundproof windows installed to muffle the rumblings of the nearby ‘L’ train. Retail and restaurant tenants are also planned. The hotel is expected to open in 2020 and will be managed by an undisclosed San Francisco-based hotel operator.

The Reserve Hotel , a member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, is a 234-room luxury hotel occupying the top five floors of a historic landmark building. The Reserve Hotel began construction in late 2018, and is expected to open in late 2020. With its location in a historic office building in the heart of Chicago’s financial district and next door to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the design, finish and artwork throughout The Reserve Hotel will reflect the building’s history and the story of the LaSalle Street financial district.

Scheduled to open in 2021, the 58-story Equinoxwill have 165 hotel rooms and 370 residential units in the West Loop. It will include an on-site fitness club and parking for 150 vehicles accessible via Court Place.

ATTRACTIONS & TOURS

theMART, with the City of Chicago, announced the program alignment of Art on theMART, the largest permanent digital art projection in the world, with the 2019 Year of Chicago Theatre, a city-wide celebration of Chicago’s theater community spearheaded by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the League of Chicago Theatres. Art on theMART’s spring program features Chicago Theaterwith a work by renowned lighting designer John Boesche. On March 13, 2019 lighting designer John Boesche unveiled the first acts of seven soliloquies, a multi-part projection piece that captures seven significant Chicago theater artists in brief solo performances. The performance loops for two hours a night, five days a week (Wednesday – Sunday), beginning approximately 15 minutes after sunset. Subsequently, a collaborative piece by two Chicago theater professionals, scenic designer John Musial and Lucky Plush Artistic Director Julia Rhoads, will premiere on the river-façade of theMART in June 2019.

On March 12, 2019 Mark Kelly, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), announced the official launch of the Water Tower Arts District. Fifteen of Chicago’s renowned cultural organizations, all located within walking distance of the historic Chicago Water Tower on Michigan Avenue, have come together to form a unique cultural coalition in an area that is reemerging from its roots as a thriving arts center. The Water Tower Arts District is comprised of the following cultural organizations: The Arts Club of Chicago, Broadway in Chicago’s BroadwayPlayhouse at Water Tower Place, City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower, Graham Foundation, International Museumof Surgical Science, Lookingglass Theatre Company, Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA), Museum ofContemporary Art (MCA), the Newberry Library, Poetry Foundation, Porchlight Music Theatre, Richard Gray Gallery, the Richard H. Driehaus Museum, the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, and the Society of Architectural Historians.

The famous Brick Barwill be in Chicago in August 2019, and it will consist of over one million LEGO ® bricks transported and assembled into the ultimate nostalgia trip. The bar will feature sculptures made completely from Lego bricks as well as an abundance of blocks for people to shape into their own creations. The session will involve building competitions for prizes, a table tennis competition played on a Lego built table with over 22,000 bricks, a wishing well and more. Admission to the Brick Bar is on a first-come, first-served basis with limited tickets available. To register, simply sign up on their website for pre-release tickets.

The first-ever Brick Safariis coming to Brookfield Zoothis Summer 2019. Beginning May 11 to September 29, 2019, more than 40 life-size animal sculptures will be swimming, stampeding and flying into Brookfield Zoo. Gaze upon wildlife sculptures created from millions of individual LEGO bricks. These never-before-seen-in-North-America LEGO ® brick sculptures will amaze kids, those young at heart and Adult Fans of LEGO ®. Walk past lions, tigers and bears, and you might even spot an elephant with his trunk held high or a silverback gorilla watching the crowd.

Chicago’s First Lady Cruisesand the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) have announced the 2019 schedule for the Chicago Architecture Foundation Center (CAC) River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady. The world-renowned tour, which began daily departures on March 30, 2019 has inspired both Chicagoland residents and visitors with the city’s rich architectural history for decades. The 90-minute tour, which glides across all three branches of the Chicago River, is lauded as the best way to see world-famous architecture in Chicago, the birthplace of the skyscraper, with panoramic views that simply cannot be seen by foot.

After completing an extensive two-year renovation and refit, Come Sailing, Inc.announced the addition of sailing vessel Druid to its charter fleet. Built in 1981 by the Shannon Sailboat Company, Druid was designed to handle any weather condition or sea state. Chicago Detourshas redesigned their popular Historic Chicago Walking Bar Tour to step inside the Gilded Age mansion that is now Lawry’s restaurant. This educational pub crawl tour shows a secret side to Michigan Avenue. Guests get to see opulent architecture, now including seeing the hidden architectural details on the outside of Lawry’s. On this new tour stop, guests step inside to grab a drink and hear more history while enjoying a glass of wine or Lawry’s signature “Brown Gown Ale,” and taste house-made potato chips deliciously doused in Lawry’s famous seasoning. Located just a block off Michigan Ave, this building also once held a theater with quirky performances. This new revised tour is available year-round, five nights a week.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic masterpiece, the Frederick C. Robie House, re-emerged fully restored on March 29, 2019. The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust’shistoric $3 million interior restoration reveals Wright’s original 1910 vision. Considered one of the 20th century’s most significant buildings, Robie House is the consummate expression of Wright’s Prairie style of architecture and a showcase of his groundbreaking architectural philosophy. Conceived as an integral whole, where site and structure, interior and exterior, furniture, ornament and architecture come together, the residence is the most forward-looking of Wright’s Prairie homes. The restored spaces brilliantly reflect Wright’s concept of a dwelling place as a work of art.

Lucky Strike Entertainment debuted its latest creation, Lucky Strike Social, in Chicago’s iconic Wrigleyville neighborhood on February 15, 2019. Lucky Strike Social at Wrigleyville is a one-of-a-kind entertainment experience and a new destination for North Siders with time to spare, bringing together chef-driven food and craft beverages, along with eight Lucky Strike Lanes, over 100 electronic gaming systems including the exclusive Daytona Championship USA Motion, plus two private party rooms and a “Prize Room” retail store in over 30,000 sq. ft. of social space with views of Wrigley Field.

Untouchable Tours: Chicago’s Original Gangster Tournow offers their Gangster Tour daily as of March 1, 2019. Their guides present an accurate account of the activities in Chicago during the 1920’s and 1930’s Prohibition Era. Guests can expect to learn about the exploits of Capone, Moran, Dillinger and the rest of the boys. Key sites included on the tour are the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, the Biograph Theater and the Holy Name Cathedral.

FOOD & DRINK

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and James Beard Foundation CEO Clare Reichenbach announced on December 10, 2018 that Chicago will continue to host the James Beard Foundation Awards, an annual event honoring the best of the best in the food and restaurant industry, for an additional six years. The James Beard Foundation Awards successfully made the move to Chicago in 2015, with the support of the city, Choose Chicago and the Illinois Restaurant Association, amongst other city and state supporters. Previously slated to complete its run in 2021, the announcement ensures that the James Beard Foundation Awards will call Chicago home through 2027.

Join Choose Chicagoand the Illinois Restaurant Associationin celebration of Chicago’s vibrant food scene during JamesBeard Eats WeekApril 26 to May 6, 2019. More than 100 Chicagoland restaurants will create customized dishes or menus inspired by the James Beard Foundation’s namesake chef, a pioneer of American dining. Now in its fifth year, James Beard Eats Week brings together the restaurant community and the public to celebrate the James Beard Awards weekend. Restaurants participating in Eats Week donate to the James Beard Foundation Scholarship Fund, which supports aspiring Chicago culinary students on a path to success in the hospitality industry. In 2018, Eats Week raised $13,900 for the scholarship program.

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is pleased to present the summer season of Chicago CityMarkets. Chicago City Markets sell fresh seasonal produce, flowers, prepared foods, unique Chicago-made products and rare finds – at Chicago’s longest running farmers market on Daley Plaza, the historic Maxwell Street Market and a dozen more community markets in neighborhoods across Chicago. A complete list of city-run markets, along with dates and times are listed at chicagocitymarkets.us. The official kickoff of the Chicago City Markets summer season will take place on May 9, 2019 at 9 a.m. at the Daley Plaza City Market.

The team behind the award-winning Three Dots and a Dashfrom Lettuce Entertain Youopened The Bamboo Room, a 22 -seat bar room featuring guest bartenders, rum classes and cocktails crafted with their most high-end, rare rums. Led by beverage director Kevin Beary, The Bamboo Room is tucked inside Three Dots and a Dash and was unveiled February 14, 2019. The Bamboo Room is a space that hosts nationally recognized guest bartenders, pop-up events from bars around the country, interactive rum tastings and limited-edition mug release parties. The team of knowledgeable bartenders also offer interactive and personalized experiences for private parties like group cocktail classes and more.

The one-of-a-kind culinary experience that is Barton G. The Restaurantopened a location in Chicago’s River North neighborhood on February 15, 2019. The 12,000 sq. ft. Hubbard Street location is the third of the luxurious, innovative and cutting-edge eatery, joining its sister hot spots in Miami Beach and Los Angeles. Occupying the first two floors of the former Sullivan’s Steakhouse in one of Chicago’s hottest districts, Barton G. The Restaurant Chicago promises to dazzle guests with its food, service and design.

Beatrixopened a new location in Oakbrook Center, on February 27, 2019. This is the first suburban location for Beatrix, and the fourth of its kind in Illinois. The concept was created by Lettuce Entertain YouEnterprises’ Founder Rich Melman, Executive Partner and Divisional President Marc Jacobs, Partner Michael Giles and Chefs/Partners John Chiakulas, Rita Dever and Susan Weaver. Beatrix Oak Brook features its signature healthy meets delicious menu options, coffee and bakery counter. The restaurant features its largest coffee bar and lounge with seating up to 100 guests. New to the fresh-squeezed juice menu are the Celery and Caraway Juice, Activated Charcoal Lemonade and Wellness Shots. The Oak Brook location features Beatrix’s largest private dining space with seating up to 60 guests and up to 100 guests for reception style events.

On April 4, 2019, Boka Restaurant Groupopened three new concepts in partnership with The Hoxton, Chicago. Cabra, a Peruvian-inspired restaurant by Chef Stephanie Izard on the rooftop; Cira, a modern Mediterranean restaurant by Chef Chris Panfel on the ground floor; and Lazy Bird, an upscale cocktail bar tucked away on the lower level of the hotel. Boka Restaurant Group was founded by Rob Katz and Kevin Boehm in 2002, and has since become one of the premier chef-drive restaurant groups in the country.

Old Town is about to get a little sweeter as DineAmic’s BomboBar is opening a second location in early Spring 2019. Following four years of success in the West Loop, one of Chicago’s most popular doughnut and sandwich destinations has expanded to the heart of Old Town. Taking over the former Buzz Bait Taqueria space, the 1,500 sq. ft. eatery will bring BomboBar’s famous Bomboloni, BomboBurgers, over-the-top Hotter Chocolates and gelato to the neighborhood.

Chefs and partners Marlon Tan, Cybill Tan and Malvin Tan have brought sweet and zesty Filipino cuisine to Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood with their newest venture Cebuwhich opened March 14, 2019. Guests can enjoy a mixture of Chinese, Spanish and local Filipino dishes in a cozy, intimate ambiance. Cebu’s has a 736 sq. ft. dining room along with a 1,025 sq. ft. outdoor courtyard.

The folks behind Giantare shaking things up with their next establishment, Chef’s Special Cocktail Bar, a dressed-up dive bar in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood opening Summer 2019. Building on the same sincere spirit that brought them success at Giant, the second act for partners Jason Vincent, Ben Lustbader and Josh Perlman is a deliberate one. Chef’s Special will be a spirited, “no judgement” bar that serves great food. Joining the Chef’s Special team are Giant alums Chase Bracamontes as general manager and Aaron Kabot and Tom Scodari as chefs. Designed as a place to grab a drink and stay for three, Chef’s Special Cocktail Bar will be open late and encourages guests to dig into its food menu and warm, convivial atmosphere.

In Chicago’s Fulton Market neighborhood Fairgroundscafé opened their fifth location in late March 2019, and it marks the first Fairgrounds to offer a full bar experience in addition to the robust food and beverage offerings available at all cafes. The cocktail menu focuses on a reinvention of the classics and nostalgia. There is tea and coffee infused beverages with an emphasis on interactive, experiential elements that align with the diverse and whimsical Fairgrounds brand. Guests will see twists on classics, with nods to a White Russian, Hot Toddy and the Fair classic, Shake-Up.

The Farmheads hospitality group has the mission of offering affordable, approachable Midewestern fare based on locally sourced and sustainable ingredients. Branching off their first Farmhouse Tavernthe Farmheads hospitality group will soon open a fourth Chicago spot in April 2019 called Farm Bar. The newest Farm Bar is a Midwestern Craft Tavern focused on delivering warm hospitality, great beer, cocktails and wonderful food in a comfortable neighborhood setting in Edgewater. Farm Bar will offer local craft beers and liquor from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan along with their own ciders.

Galley Group, the team behind innovative food hall and restaurant accelerator concepts in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Detroit, is excited to announce the local Chicago chefs who will launch five new culinary concepts inside Fulton Galleyin June 2019. Located in Chicago’s Fulton Market, the 12,000 sq. ft. space will have a 30-seat bar featuring an innovative cocktail program and curated craft beer lineup, as well as a cozy private dining space. New chefs will rotate in on a regular basis. Each chef will receive a fully built-out kitchen, front of house staff, and more, so that they are able to focus solely on launching their new concept and gaining a loyal following. The first five concepts to open inside of Fulton Galley are: Taco Mucho from Ron Aleman, Pink Salt by Palita Sriratana, Steingold’s Deli from Aaron Steingold, Italianette by Gerad Gobel and Alexis Rorabaugh and Fairview by Dennis Bernard.

LM Restaurant Group(LMRG) is pleased to announce their newest restaurant concept, Grant Park Bistro opened on the ground floor of the Hotel Essex, formerly known as the Essex Inn. Grant Park Bistro is a modern French grill focusing on contemporary versions of traditional French dishes. The restaurant is comprised of a café on the corner of 8th St and Michigan Ave., a bar area facing Michigan Ave. with seating for 38 and an interior dining room with an open kitchen that seats 55. A patio area along Michigan Ave. seating 40 will also be available during the warmer months. Grant Park Bistro opened for breakfast only on April 1, 2019 and will open for lunch and dinner service later in the month.

The Franco’s Restaurant Group of family-owned restaurants will open Il Culaccino, a 225-seat, fine Italian dining restaurant in Chicago’s McCormick Square neighborhood in early June 2019. Anchored in the Arrive Lex Tower, Il Culaccino is the first upscale Italian, full-service restaurant in the McCormick Square entertainment district. Il Culaccino will offer a wide selection of Italian and international wines that complement a menu that pays homage to Italian classics. It’s conveniently located steps away from Wintrust Arena, and a short walk from McCormick Place, Chicago’s premier convention and exhibition center.

Chicago’s Next -Generation Milk Bar, JoJo’s Milk Bar, opened February 28, 2019 in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. JoJo’s Milk Bar takes on creative desserts and a modern diner destination, setting a lively scene along Hubbard St. The menu, led by Executive Chef/Partner Christine McCabe, features a selection of over-the-top sweet treats including milkshakes, milk bars, gourmet cookies and infused milks, along with a savory menu of quality diner dishes. The intimate, multi-level space is reminiscent of an old school diner, reinvented with a modern-day vibe that features vintage tongue-in-cheek details, offering seating up to 100 guests along with a walk-up window for coffee, pastries and transportable menu items

On March 8, 2019 Chef Charlie McKenna unveiled Lillie’s Q, which serves the same authentic smoked meats, fried chicken and southern sides, but in a whole new way. The restaurant now offers counter walk-up service on a first-come, first-served basis with meats cut and weighed on the spot. The menu features Lillie’s Q fan-favorites from the past nine years including pulled pork, tri-tip, smoked wings, Carolina grits and brisket along with a rotation of daily specials that incorporate inspiration from McKenna’s travels and things that he loves to eat at home with family and friends.

Brian Galati and Chireal Jordan, co-owners of Machine Hospitality Group, opened a new project, Machine: engineereddining and drink, on March 11, 2019. The restaurant is located in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood with seasoned chef Trevor Hoyte at the helm of the kitchen. Chef Hoyte’s thoughtfully curated menu offers dishes that are seasonally inspired and flavor-forward with a Midwestern familiarity. Machine also offers a very exciting floral component: The Florist at Machine. An array of flowers are available for purchase, and Machine’s in-house floral specialist will not only build beautiful arrangements for guests, but also help them to design their own.

President and Brewmaster Jared Rouben and CEO Jeremy Cohn of Moody Tongue Brewing Company— the Chicago-based brewery built on the philosophy of culinary brewing — are thrilled to announce they are moving operations to an entirely new 25,800 sq. ft. space in the city’s South Loop this summer. In tandem with their five-year anniversary in 2019, the large-scale expansion will immediately double the brewery’s current production capacity in order to keep up with growing demand, with room for future growth. The new brewery will allow for the development of more inventive culinary beers to add to the existing collection, as well as an expanded barrel-aging program that has already produced popular beers such as the Bourbon Barrel Aged 12 Layer Cake Imperial Stout and Bourbon Barrel Aged Chocolate Barleywine.

The team behind Ramen-Sanand Sushi-Sanof Lettuce Entertain You Enterpriseswill open Mr. Makiin Streeterville in Spring 2019. The new concept is built around maki rolls and the Japanese combo meal known as teishoku, which became the team’s favorite way to eat during their travels in Japan. Mr. Maki will provide a quick dining experience and tremendous value for those that live and work in the neighborhood. Mr. Maki will be open for lunch, dinner and carryout with delivery to follow shortly after.

The Nobel, opening Spring 2019, is an exquisite indoor/outdoor rooftop bar hidden on the 24th floor of St. Jane Hotel. The rooftop lounge boasts dramatic skyline views of Michigan Avenue from its home in the historic Carbide and Carbon Building. Inspired by Jane Addams, the first woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize, the cocktail lounge will feature hand crafted cocktails, champagne and small gourmet bites.

Politan Row Chicagois the new food hall from founder Will Donaldson debuting in Spring 2019 in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. Donaldson, who also runs the popular food halls St. Roch Market New Orleans, Auction House Market New Orleans and St. Roch Market Miami, has formed a new parent company called Politan Group, which will house the existing concepts along with Politan Row Chicago. Politan Row Chicago will offer all-day dining, counter-side service and a variety of seating options allowing guests to dine, grab a drink, work or simply relax. Politan Row will feature a thoughtfully curated selection of 12 local chef-driven concepts including Sandra Holl, Chris Reed and Yosi Alhadif. New to Politan Row is Bar Politan, an inviting craft cocktail bar anchoring the center of the space, and Perle, a German-inspired, outdoor beer garden and the brand’s first standalone beverage concept. Housed in a sleekly designed matte-black shipping container, Perle will feature a selection of German beers on draft as well as seasonal German wine on tap.

Revival Food Hall, 16” on Center hospitality’s all-local, chef-driven dining concept announced their new Pizza City-a rotating pizza pop-up series- which began on March 18, 2019. Revival Food Hall has brought some of Chicagoland’s beloved independent pizza talents to the heart of the Loop. The all-new concept is curated alongside 13 -time James Beard Award-winning food reporter Steve Dolinsky of ABC 7’s “Hungry Hound” and author of Pizza City, USA! Continuing its mission of bringing the best neighborhood dining hot spots under one roof. Revival Food Hall will showcase four rotating pizza experts throughout the next 12 months, including: Pat’s Pizzaon June 17, 2019, Dante’s Pizzeriaon September 16, 2019 and Palermo’s 95thon December 16, 2019.

Revival Food Hallis excited to announce the first new installment of 2019 in their rotating pop-up series. Acclaimed Chicago Chef Bill Kim brings Urbanbelly, his Wicker Park hotspot for dumplings, booze and bowls, to the all-local, chef-driven food hall. February 4 to May 3, 2019, Revival welcomes Chef Kim, who is widely considered to be a pioneer in the movement of fine dining chefs introducing casual concepts, including Urbanbelly. Guests can indulge in an abbreviated menu that honors Kim’s Korean heritage while challenging convention. Charlie Davis and Katie Morgan, the duo behind Right Bee Cider , are opening a taproom at the end of April 2019 in Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood. Fans will be able to get Right Bee Cider straight from the source. The new taproom’s crisp, dry and refreshing ciders are all natural and made from fresh pressed American grown apples. The upgrade will have six taps, a full bar and seating for up to 50 guests.

The new Indian cuisine hotspot Superkhana International is a unique restaurant celebrating Indian flavors, local cooking and the delicious culinary connections between India and America opening May 2019. A joint venture between chefs Yoshi Yamada, Zeeshan Shah and Jason Hammel, Superkhana International is located in Chicago’s emerging Logan Square neighborhood. Superkhana International reflects the culinary sensibilities of Chefs Yoshi and Zeeshan and is a natural evolution of their popular pop up, Bombay Breakdown. Superkhana International will serve a variety of beverages from champagne to cider, natural wines to beer and highballs to sparkling punch.

On March 8, 2019 Sweetwater Tavern and Grillereopened its doors following a three-month overhaul of the space. The Michigan Avenue dining destination celebrates its 10th year with a major refresh of the interior space, which includes a bright, airy feel, stainless steel accents and varied seating options, an overhaul of the main bar, updated ceiling treatments and more. The modern American restaurant – known for its extensive craft beer list, seasonal cocktails and upbeat atmosphere – also reopened with a refreshed menu, with new dishes including Chicken Nachos, Nashville Hot Chicken Wrap, Peppercorn Crusted Tuna and Cauliflower Steak.

Chicago will soon be home to Time Out Market, the food and cultural market bringing the best of the city under one roof: its best chefs, drinks and cultural experiences, based on editorial curation. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) announced the 2019 dates of its marquee festivals,events and exhibitions. 2019 has been designated the “Year of Chicago Theatre” and throughout the year, many City of Chicago programs and festivals will include a theatre component to highlight the diverse theatre companies and professionals that call Chicago home. The city will also continue to celebrate and showcase its musical legacy and history for residents and visitors. Local and national artists will shine a spotlight on Chicago’s impact on the past, present and future of global music at the Chicago Gospel Music Festival, the Chicago BluesFestivaland the Chicago Jazz Festival. In the Chicago Cultural Center, the exhibition Bronzeville Echoes: Faces andPlaces of Chicago’s African American Musicvisually explores the legacy of Chicago’s African American music scene from Ragtime to the contemporary genres of House and Hip Hop through the unexpected stories of legendary musicians and places where they performed. Annually, DCASE presents 2,000 free-admission cultural programs for an audience of well over 25 million residents and visitors.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) are pleased to announce the highlights of Millennium Park’s 2019 summer season running from May through September. Millennium Park will offer programming celebrating the Year of Chicago Theatre, traditional favorites like the Chicago Gospel MusicFestival, Chicago Blues Festival,Summer Music Series, Summer Film Series and SummerDance Celebration, in addition to dozens of free concerts, events, family activities, nature programs, workouts, public art and more. Visitors will enjoy a premier experience at all of this summer’s programming at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. After 15 years as one of the world’s best outdoor concert sound systems, the speakers and audio control systems at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion have been completely upgraded for the 2019 season. Other highlights of the summer season are several events celebrating Latinx arts and culture. On June 30, 2019 the Mariachi Heritage Foundationwill co-produce the 5th Annual Chicago MariachiFestival. The Mexican Indigenous Music Festival co-produced by the Old Town School of Folk Music and Cenzontles will take place July 21, 2019 and August 27, 2019.

The Art Institute of Chicagopresents The People Shall Govern!Medu Art Ensemble and the Anti-Apartheid Poster April 27 to September 2, 2019. The Medu Art Ensemble formed in the late 1970s in opposition to South Africa’s apartheid policy of racial segregation and violent injustice. The People Shall Govern! is the first -ever exhibition on Medu in North America and will feature amongst its 130 objects more than 60 posters by members of the ensemble and related markers which were all recently acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago. With this recent acquisition, the Art Institute is home to the most comprehensive holding of these vibrant works outside South Africa.

The Chicago Architecture Biennialannounced that its 2019 edition, titled …and other such stories, will form an expansive and multi-faceted exploration of the field of architecture and the built environment globally. Developed through a research-led approach, the biennial will address the potency of space, architecture, and the natural world as they relate to four areas of inquiry: No Land Beyond, Appearances and Erasures, Rights and Reclamations, andCommon Ground. The Biennial, which is free and open to the public across all citywide locations, will return September 19, 2019 and run through January 5, 2020. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicagoand the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel announced their on-going partnership, “MCA Checks In” at the Chicago Athletic Association hotel. Throughout the year the MCA will extend its campus to the Chicago Athletic Association hotel for art-inspired events crafted for Chicago’s culture lovers. During the month of April 2019 guests can view a Laurie Simmons inspired installation in the Milk Room Fine Art Case located in the hotel lobby on the second floor.

The Chicago Blues Experience is slated to open in 2020, and it will celebrate pioneering artists and generations of musicians who have been influenced by blues and continue to carry on its traditions. Situated near Millennium Park, it will be filled with history-driven interactive displays, tributes to local legends and Chicago blues memorabilia, as well as a performance lounge and restaurant.

The Chicago History Museumpresents its upcoming exhibit, Silver Screen to Mainstream: American Fashion in the1930s and ‘40s, which explores the influence of Hollywood on American fashion. Thirty ensembles from the Museum’s permanent collection trace how a glamorous new American style emerged from the harsh realities of Great Depression and World War II. Sponsored by The Costume Council of the Chicago History, the exhibit opened April 8, 2019 to the public.

EXPO Chicagoannounced on March 4, 2019 the expansion of curatorial initiatives taking place during the eighth annual exposition (September 19 to 22, 2019), including the creation of the Red Bull Arts Detroit Global Curatorial Initiative, an expansion of the Curatorial Exchangesupported by Red Bull Arts Detroit; and new partnerships and programs surrounding the Curatorial Forum, the exposition’s comprehensive program for mid-career and established curators presented by Independent Curators International(ICI). This multi-city, fully funded curatorial initiative is taking place surrounding the eighth annual exposition. Conceived as a two-part professionalization and cultural immersion program engaging Chicago and Detroit, the fellowship provides two to four international curators the opportunity to participate in EXPO CHICAGO’s 2019 Curatorial Exchange program, followed by the opportunity to visit Detroit and engage the city’s artists, galleries and institutions. The exposition’s curatorial developments and commitment to programmatic expansion support its larger mission to increase the international dialogue and curatorial engagement taking place in the Midwest.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the Field Museum’snewest exhibition, opened March 22, 2019. Named after the annual contest hosted by the London Natural History Museum, the longest-standing nature photography competition in the world, this immersive gallery experience brings visitors around the world through 100 breathtaking images reflecting the richness and diversity of life on Earth. From a simmering volcano in Russia to walruses in the icy waters of Norway, each photo carries with it a vivid story about what’s in—and beyond—the frame. Ultimately, Wildlife Photographer ofthe Year is an invitation to look more closely: at the diversity of this planet’s wildlife, at our own relationships with nature and at the urgency to conserve the habitats these images depict. The exhibition runs through January 12, 2020 and is presented in both English and Spanish. Admission is included with either a Discovery or All-Access Pass. WildlifePhotographer of the Year was developed and produced by the London Natural History Museum.

Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute of Chicagopresents The Black Harvest Film Festival, the Midwest’s largest- and longest-running Black film festival, celebrates its 25th anniversary from August 3 to 29, 2019. The Gene Siskel Film Center’s most vibrant annual showcase features provocative films that tell stories, spark lively discussions and address issues relating to the experiences from the African diaspora. Black Harvest features Chicago premieres, filmmaker appearances, panel discussions and special events. Presented are a combined total of over 60 features, documentaries and shorts, including a number connected to Chicago, affirming the city’s role as a vital center for independent filmmaking.

Hamilton: The Exhibitionwill premiere in Chicago on April 27, 2019. Created by Hamilton musical creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and producer Jeffrey Seller, this 360-degree, immersive exhibit is designed to take visitors deeper into the life and times of Alexander Hamilton, while at the same time chronicling the American Revolution and the creation of the United States of America. The exhibit will feature an audio tour narrated by Miranda. With a dynamic, interactive mix of in-depth scenography, lighting, sound, multimedia and music, Hamilton: The Exhibition will give visitors an experiential journey from Hamilton’s childhood in St. Croix to his untimely death in Weehawken, New Jersey. The exhibit will open on Northerly Island in a specially-constructed free-standing structure the size of a football field. Following its Chicago premiere, the exhibition will travel to select U.S. cities.

The Hotel Chicago West Loophas announced a partnership with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, the global leader in physical medicine and rehabilitation for adults and children with the most severe, complex conditions, to showcase more than 30 pieces of art by patients with functional impairments. The special exhibit made its official debut February 26, 2019 at the boutique hotel’s cultural gallery, The Annex. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Showcase is being exhibited in one of the hotel’s gallery wings where it will remain on public view until September 2019. The exhibit temporarily joins The Annex’s 100-piece Permanent Collection of 2-D media that occupies all the hotel’s public spaces, and its renowned street murals by local urban artists that now cover six guestroom walls.

Experience the first interactive, 3D exhibit of its kind What Can a Hologram Tell You about the Holocaust?at the IllinoisHolocaust Museum’snew Take a Stand Center. The Museum of Contemporary Photographyat Columbia College Chicago (MoCP) will present Chicago Stories: CarlosJavier Ortiz and David Schalliolfrom April 11 to July 7, 2019. In response to Birmingham, Alabama, 1963: DawoudBey/Black Star, this exhibition will showcase photographs and films by Carlos Javier Ortiz and David Schalliol pulled from the museum’s permanent collection and the Midwest Photographers Project (MPP). Ortiz considers contemporary black life in comparison to the ideals of the Great Migration while Schalliol questions the ever-changing urban landscape as it relates to larger race and class inequities.

The Museum of Science and Industry (MSI)launched its first-ever and most expansive exhibition, Wired to Wear™, open from March 21, 2019 to May 2020. Wired to Wear™ is dedicated to the future of wearable technology, an industry that is revolutionizing the way we interact with our clothing. Throughout the 8,000–sq.-ft. exhibit, guests will learn how merging technology into clothing will transform what we wear into devices that will make us healthier, stronger and smarter. The Obama Presidential Centeris expected to open in 2021 in historic Jackson Park on the South Side of Chicago. It will include three buildings—a museum, forum and library—that will form a campus surrounding a public plaza. The Center is estimated to support nearly 5,000 new, local jobs during its construction and more than 2,500 permanent jobs once the Center opens. The Center will attract up to 760,000 annual visitors, and in its first ten years, is expected to have a total economic impact of $3.1 billion.

As a means of expanding access to the aquarium to an audience that might have obligations during weekdays, SheddAquariumis launching is a new series of events for guests 21 and older with special programming and custom food and drink options designed to offer more mature, unexpected ways to look nature in the eye. ‘Shedd After Hours’ offers adults an opportunity to experience the aquarium in a whole new way. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) Commissioner Mark Kelly, League of Chicago Theatres Executive Director Deb Clapp, and other civic, arts and theatre leaders announced 2019 as the Year ofChicago Theatre. This citywide, year-long focus on theatre is the first of its kind in the U.S. The initiative will include theatre performances – including improv, dance, opera, puppetry and more – and special events for the public at hundreds of cultural venues, theaters, parks and neighborhood locations throughout the city. Its mission is to make 2019 a year in which the city of Chicago emphasizes the prominence of its expansive and innovative theatre industry.

On May 7, 2019 the Auditorium Theatre’s 2018-19 National Geographic Live season closes out with Point of No Return, featuring the mountain climber and explorer Hilaree Nelson, the first woman to summit Mt. Everest and its neighboring mountain Lhotse in a single 24-hour period. Nelson will recount the story of the National Geographic’s climb to the peak of Burma’s Hkakabo Razi, accompanied by stunning photos and video of the expedition.

The previously forgotten space was discovered in 2017 during the renovation of the hotel when dropped ceilings were removed revealing the original grand space within the 1926 historic building. Broadway In Chicago will handle the sales and marketing for Teatro ZinZanni.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Alderman James Cappleman, Jam Productions and Farpoint Development announced Chicago’s historic Uptown Theatrewill be restored and reopened as the crown jewel of a revitalized Uptown entertainment district. The 93-year-old landmark building, vacant for more than 35 years, will be used for a variety of live performances and special events. The $75 million project will comprehensively restore the Spanish Revival-style building as a modern entertainment venue. Restored decorative finishes, new seats and a reconfigured first floor will increase total capacity from approximately 4,100-5,800 people. Restoration started in late 2018 and is slated to be completed in 2020.

SPORTS & RECREATION

From June 7 to 9, 2019, the Bearswill hold the ultimate gathering of fans, players and alumni at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center to celebrate their 100th Anniversary. The entire 2019 team and coaching staff, along with Bears Hall of Famers and alumni are scheduled to attend. The weekend will feature autograph sessions, photo opportunities, panels, memorabilia and merchandise sales, interactive games, kids activities, a walk-though Bears history zone and more. Bears100 Celebration Weekend is sponsored by Hyundai.

The 312 RiverRunwill connect the surrounding Irving Park, North Center, Avondale and Albany Park neighborhoods to three parks with one path for approximately two miles. Once completed, 312 RiverRun will transform the riverfront neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side into one of the city’s largest recreational hubs that provides residents with an unobstructed network of parks and recreational amenities. It will extend across 95 acres with facilities and programming for every athletic activity supported by the Chicago Park District. The project kicked off with the groundbreaking Riverview Bridge, which is anticipated to be completed in Summer 2019. A second project, the Irving Park Rd. Bridge and Multi-Use Path, due to be completed in Summer 2020, will extend a pedestrian and bike path under Irving Park Rd. and link California Park to Horner Park north. Completion of the Riverview Bridge and the Irving Park Rd. Bridge project will establish the full 312 RiverRun, providing a continuous path from Belmont to Montrose.

TRANSPORTATION

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced the city’s eight-year plan to expand O’Hare International Airport, the largest and most expensive revamp in the airport’s history. This announcement marks the first major capital improvements to O’Hare’s terminals in more than 25 years. A new Terminal Area Plan for O’Hare will completely redevelop the terminals and concourses, with Terminal 5 to undergo an upgrade and expansion, Terminal 2 to be largely demolished and rebuilt to include a new international arrivals facility and renovations made to Terminals 1 and 3. These changes will expand gate capacity and set in motion a wide range of other improvements to significantly enhance airline performance and the overall passenger experience. Through a new capital program valued at more than $8.5 billion, O’Hare’s facilities will receive a major upgrade. With construction to begin in 2019, the transformation is expected to be completed in 2026.

O’Hare International Airportadded new concessions this winter, including Burger Federation. With their delicious take on gourmet burgers, Burger Federation was welcomed to Terminal 3’s “L Stinger” gates (gates L20-L24).

The Chicago Department of Aviationis overseeing major modernization not only at O’Hare International Airport but at Midway International Airport as well. At Midway International Airport, a nearly $400 million modernization program is underway to improve travel to and from the airport including a larger security checkpoint for faster screening; more dining and shopping options; and an expanded garage for convenient parking next to the terminal. These modernizations are set to be completed by Summer 2020 and will improve the customer experience and meet growing demand for air travel through Chicago.

The Chicago Department of Aviationjoined airport partners for the opening of Big Shoulders Coffee at MidwayInternational Airporton January 24, 2019. The new coffee joint offers travelers a daily selection of locally brewed and roasted coffees delivered fast and hot. This new location is part of the 70 new food and retail brands arriving to Midway as part of the $75 million concessions redevelopment led by the CDA with Midway Partnership. Located near Gate A14 on the A Concourse, this is the first, standalone Big Shoulders Coffee location at Midway. Big Shoulders has been a city staple since 2012, with locations in the city of Chicago in the following areas – the Loop, West Town the Gold Coast, River North and in the Chicago Board of Trade building.
