CHICAGO - The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) has announced the selection of Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) as operator of the planned 1,200-room headquarters hotel next door to McCormick Place.

The hotel, scheduled to open in late 2016, will be operated as a Marriott Marquis, the company's premier convention center hotel brand. The new Chicago hotel will be the only Marriott Marquis in the Metropolitan Chicago area.

The MPEA Board made the selection at its September 13 Board meeting, following a two-phase review process that included identifying operators with the experience and expertise to operate a large, convention center hotel property.

The new hotel, to be developed by MPEA, will provide the facilities and amenities required to serve as the headquarters for groups holding shows at McCormick Place.  Connected to the West Building by a sky bridge, it will play a major role in revitalization of the neighborhood surrounding the convention center.

The entrance to the Marriott Marquis will be on South Michigan Avenue just south of Cermak Road in the historic Motor Row District. Plans call for preserving facades of several historic buildings adjacent to the hotel as part of the hotel complex.

"Development of this hotel is another step forward for Chicago's thriving convention and trade show industry," said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "These hundreds of additional nearby hotels rooms will strengthen our competitive edge and help us attract new business to Chicago, creating economic impact for years to come."

MPEA CEO Jim Reilly said the Marriott Marquis would be a great addition to the emerging McCormick Place Entertainment District.

"We are very pleased to incorporate Marriott's iconic business brand into the hotel planned for the McCormick Place Entertainment District," Reilly said. "The Marriott Marquis brand will be the perfect complement to the headquarters hotel concept and we look forward to Marriott's input regarding design, construction and marketing of this flagship hotel."

"Marriott International is delighted to have been selected by the MPEA to bring the Marriott Marquis brand to McCormick Place. This hotel will be perfectly suited for the tremendous conference and meeting business that the City of Chicago attracts, and we look forward to finalizing agreements with the MPEA to establish a presence for the Marriott Marquis brand in this unique location," said Noah Silverman, Marriott's Chief Development Officer, North America Full Service Hotels.

The hotel will be one of the anchors of the McCormick Place Entertainment District - several blocks of hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues and other amenities that will create a vibrant, authentic and walkable urban experience - not just for convention-goers, but for the entire city.
