The Second City
  • Since opening its doors 1959, The Second City has grown to become the world’s premier comedy club, theater and school of improvisation. From the next Saturday Night Live stars to people just looking to laugh with the best in the business, no trip to Chicago would be complete without a visit here. HISTORY & FAMOUS ALUMNI The Second City has launched generation after generation of comedy legends, starting with old school icons like Alan Arkin, Ed Asner, Elaine May, Mike Nichols and Joan Rivers. In the 1970s, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner ruled Wells Street, while John Candy, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy made TV history with the Emmy-winning SCTV. Today, Second City is still developing the biggest names in comedy. Some modern day alums include Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Keegan-Michael Key and Stephen Colbert. THE SECOND CITY EXPERIENCE What's it like to see a show at The Second City? In one word, electric. Tina Fey once said, “The first time I went to see a Second City show, I was in awe of everything. I just wanted to touch the same stage that Gilda Radner had walked on. It was sacred ground.” As you sit huddled around a cocktail table filled with drinks, you'll laugh your heart out as the next generation of comedy superstars takes on the biggest issues of our time, from technology to pop culture to--of course--politics. Plus, there's a good chance you’ll watch brand new scenes come to life right there in front of you, as the troupe is infamous for developing new material during the legendary (and always free!) “Third Act,” the improv set. The Second City is home to three resident stages: the Mainstage, the e.t.c. Theater and UP Comedy Club. If a show is sold out, then check the performance calendar and make plans to attend another. With shows seven nights a week and plenty of matinee performances, there are endless entertainment options, and you can't go wrong with this roster of talent. There’s also four Training Center theaters showcasing student work and a full-service bar and restaurant, 1959 Kitchen & Bar. (Nothing goes with side-splitting laughter like boozy floats and beignets.) Be aware that it's generally first come, first served cabaret-style seating. However, you're never too far from the stage, and many scenes often have cast members in different parts of the room. Plus, the earlier you get into line, the more time you'll have to look at all the photos of previous cast members and recount all the laughs these amazingly talented people have brought into your life. That's worth the price of admission any day.
