  • Chicago, IL – Chicago joins thousands across the globe to commemorate World Refugee Day, officially observed June 20th each year and dedicated to raising awareness of the millions of refugees worldwide who are forced to flee their homes. This is Chicago’s 15th Annual World Refugee Day celebration!

Chicago World Refugee Day celebrates that Illinois is home to more than 126,000 refugees from 86 countries. We honor the new traditions and histories brought by the many refugees who have made our city their home over the last 40 years.

The World Refugee Day Chicago Committee is hosting a series of events and encouraging satellite events across the Chicago Metropolitan region that will showcase the many contributions made by our city’s diverse refugee communities.

    June 22, Daley Plaza
On Thursday, June 22nd, from 12pm – 1pm, a lunchtime concert at Daley Plaza will exhibit the spirit of collaboration among refugee communities, feature refugee youth poets and activists, expand public awareness of organizations representing and serving refugees and asylees, and celebrate the creative cultural expressions that refugees bring to our great city.

    July 08, Foster Ave Beach

On Saturday, July 8th, from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, there will be activities at Foster Beach – 5200 N Lake Shore Drive. Join us for a “One Human Family” rally at which elected officials and refugee community leaders will speak on important refugee policy and advocacy issues. This will be followed by a one-mile march into the community to showcase the unity and diversity of Chicago’s refugee community and allies. All are welcome to join us at the lakefront for our annual refugee soccer tournament, potluck, music and entertainment from around the world, children’s activities, and resource booths representing the organizations that work with refugees in Chicago. It is a day for current and former refugees and their advocates, neighbors and friends to join as a single community.

World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations to honor the courage, strength, and determination of women, men, and children who are forced to flee their homes under the threat of persecution, conflict, or other forms of violence. Since 2002, Chicago has recognized World Refugee Day by organizing events that honor the lives of refugees, give a voice to their stories, and raise awareness about the global refugee crisis. WRD Chicago is organized by staff, volunteers, and interested persons from various organizations focused on welcoming and serving refugees.
