INAUGURAL WILD MILE BLOCK PARTY, ON THE CHICAGO RIVER AT 935 W. EASTMAN ST., JUST NORTH OF REI LINCOLN PARK Saturday, June 25 from 4pm to 9pm

Join Urban Rivers, along with sponsors Structured Development, Groupon, Ozinga, Barry Callebaut,Waste Management and others, to celebrate the completion of the first section of the Wild Mile – a floating eco-park in the Goose Island area which is transitioning from its historical identity as an industrial corridor. View the 4,000-square-foot finished floating walkway, which has more than 11,000 native plants; enjoy free kayak rides, garden tours, habitat scavenger hunt, raffles, local beer vendors, food, music and more.

The Wild Mile is designed to be the next great innovative public space in the city, which will not only bring Chicagoans to the river but also inspire and engage visitors and neighbors in a unique and innovative way. Phase one of the Wild Mile has been brought to life with Urban Rivers and partners NeighborSpace and the Near North Unity Program, with support from the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning & Development and Shedd Aquarium.

The walkway provides a different way to access and interact with the river, and the learning platform is a place for students, young and old, to experience the river and get a better appreciation for nature. Through this, Urban Rivers hopes to foster a better understanding about why ecosystems are so important, and why they need to be supported, even in urban environments.

This opening represents only the start of the Wild Mile. With partners including Molson-Coors, Patagonia, REI, the British International School, National Geographic, Waste Management and others, Urban Rivers is ready to celebrate what’s been accomplished so far and move ahead toward its ultimate goal of transforming the Chicago River by adding back one piece of habitat at a time.
