Third Tuesday Jazz, Mike Allemana Trio (Aka) The Regulators
Join us in the new year for Logan Center’s Third Tuesday Jazz Series season presented in partnership with the Hyde Park Jazz Society featuring Mike Allemana (guitar), Matt Ferguson (bass), and Gerald Dowd (drums) in an intimate performance in Café Logan.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
The Regulators—guitarist Mike Allemana, bassist Matt Ferguson, and drummer Gerald Dowd—synthesize asymmetrical rhythmic cycles, funk grooves, and free improvisation. As the longstanding rhythm section for Brian O’Hern’s Model Citizens Big Band, they have developed telepathic musical communication since founding The Regulators in response to the economic crash of 2008. The trio regulates listeners’ minds with its spontaneous explorations of groove, rhythm, and sound.
All three musicians have been active on the Chicago music scene for over three decades. Dr. Mike Allemana (PhD., 2020, University of Chicago) performed for fifteen years with the late saxophone legend Von Freeman and is Director of Jazz Ensembles at the University of Chicago. Matt Ferguson was Allemana’s bandmate in Freeman’s quartet at the New Apartment Lounge and is a top-call bassist in Chicago. Gerald Dowd has performed with renowned musicians from across numerous genres, including Mavis Staples, Robbie Fulks, and children’s artist Justin Roberts. In 2022, The Regulators were featured at the 6th annual Chopin in the City Festival and at the 22nd All Souls Jazz Festival.
