Sandra Jackson-Opoku’s work-in-development, Hungry Ghost Festival runs Friday, July 22 at 7:30pm and Saturday, July 23 at 4:00pm at Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave.

Every year at Shanghai’s Hungry Ghost Festival, spirit Luz Lee reappears inexplicably. She travels to Greenville, Mississippi, a town ravaged by the Great River Flood of 1927, in order to unravel this riddle. There, a 17-year-old Luz, her Chinese grandfather, and her African-American step-grandmother have all been forced to flee. Luz is kidnapped to New Orleans where she works as a maid and then a singer in a Creole bordello. We are eventually transported back to 1939 China, at the height of Luz’ singing career. Will Ghost Luz be able to solve the mystery of what she’s lost? The presentation will run approximately 2.5 hours with an intermission.
