The Evolution of School Design in Chicago
From historic buildings that escaped the Chicago Fire of 1871 to stunning contemporary designs, explore how Chicago’s schools have been adapted for today’s needs.
Beginning with the first two-story structure in 1845 through to today’s collection of more than 640 schools, the changes in structure and design of Chicago’s public-school buildings have reflected evolving ideas about education, child development, health, and community.
This program is supported by a gift of the Gary family in memory of Myra Gary and in honor of the Docents’ 50th Anniversary.
