Testimonies on Paper: Art and Poetry of South Asian Women

Testimonies on Paper explores the many ways in which women artists have engaged with their cultures and societies through their work, and how they have interwoven their experiences as South Asian women in their work.

An array of works on paper by South Asian women artists from the Hundal Collection is brought together with scintillating responses by South Asian women poets, to create a space for alternative narratives of femininity and identity as the poets respond to the works exhibited.

The exhibition includes the selected works by artists Zarina Hashmi, Nasreen Mohamedi, Ayesha Sultana, Laila Rahman, Shahzia Sikander, Meher Afroz, Naiza Khan, Rana Begum, and Salima Hashmi; and the response of poets Mary Anne Mohanraj, Nina Sudhakar, Bhaswati Ghosh, Kashiana Singh, Dipika Mukherjee, Ami Kaye and Shikha Malaviya. The works incorporate various motifs such as spirituality, gender, displacement, and longing that reflect the artists’ desire to make sense of their lives in the world around them.

The South Asia Institute will host Testimonies on Paper: Art and Poetry of South Asian Women for public viewing from January 21, 2023, to June 10, 2023. Supported by the Hundal Collection, curated by Andrea Moratinos and advised by poet Dipika Mukherjee.

Tickets available on Eventbrite, $1 – Regular Fee $5 – Student Fee; Free on Fridays
