Strategic Saturdays – Pritzker Military Museum & Library

Join us for Strategic Saturdays! Reserve your place today in the gaming experience you won’t find anywhere else. Play one of ten featured historical wargames, plus chess and Go.

Strategy games stress decision-making choices. Players learn the impact technology has on tactics and get hands-on experience in making decisions constrained by time, terrain, weather, logistics, the enemy situation, and the limits of command and control. No need to feel intimidated if you have never played. We will email you the rules and playing aids upon receipt of your reservation. You MUST make a reservation and review the rules and playing aids, so you are properly prepared to play when you arrive.

Game Descriptions:

Versailles 1919 (1 to 4 players) [BGG complexity rating 2.74 of 5] – PMML honors 2021 Pritzker Literature Award recipient Margaret MacMillan during October. One of her many works is Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World. Players take the role of David Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau, Vittorio Orlando and Woodrow Wilson as they negotiate the many complex issues debated at the Paris Peace Conference, 1919.

Agincourt: The Triumph of Archery Over Armor, 25 October 1415 (2 players) [BGG complexity rating 2.88 of 5] – This game will immerse you in the St. Crispin’s Day battle from the Hundred Years’ War as you find your plans are constrained by the terrain, weather, type of bow your force is armed with, arrow supply, leader quality and morale.

Axis & Allies, 1941 (2 to 5 players) [BGG complexity rating 2.72 of 5] – a shorter version of Axis & Allies aimed to introduce new players to the Axis & Allies game mechanics. Players struggle for control of Europe and Asia.

Target for Today: Bombers Over the Reich, 1942-1945 (1 player) [BGG complexity rating 3.42 of 5] – A solitaire game in which the player controls a B-17 or a B-24 conducting a daylight bombing raid over Nazi-occupied Europe. Will your bomber be able to absorb the damage from flak and enemy fighter aircraft as you make your way to the target, bomb it, then struggle to return to base. Two games will be available each week; players may select either the 1 August 1943 low-level Ploesti raid or the 14 October 1943 “Black Thursday” Schweinfurt raid.

13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis (2 players) [BGG complexity rating 2.35 of 5] – a card-driven game that simulates the escalating tensions of the Cuban missile crisis. Will you achieve your goals, maintain your nation’s prestige, and avoid nuclear war?

The Cuban Missile Crisis: The Threshold of Nuclear War (2 players) [BGG complexity rating 2.43 of 5] – A fascinating card-driven game covering political and strategic decisions and actions amid increasing tension and military alert levels. Photoreconnaissance, convoys, accidents, world opinion, air and ground operations, a possible invasion of Cuba, and risk of nuclear warfare are covered in this tension-filled game.

Iron Curtain: Central Europe, 1945-1989 (2 players) [BGG complexity rating 2.63 of 5] – This Standard Combat Series game enables players to explore what would have happened if the Warsaw Pact forces had launched an attack on NATO in central Europe in 1962. How would the U.S. Army’s smaller Pentomic division force structure (1957-1963) have fared versus the Soviet Tank and Mechanized Infantry divisions. Can NATO forces successfully delay the Warsaw Pact drive, to allow reinforcements to build forces from prepositioned equipment and ammunition at POMCUS sites? Will the Warsaw Pact or NATO resort to chemical or nuclear warfare to achieve their goals?

Golan ’73 (2 players) [BGG complexity rating 3.43 of 5] – Part of the Fast Action Battle series, this game places players on the Golan Heights, October 6, 1973. Will the Syrian player successfully attack through Israeli strongpoints and defensive barriers to seize the Jordan River bridges? Can the Israeli player delay and degrade the Syrian advance with his heavily outnumbered forces?
