So You Want to Write a Romance Novel, Now What?

The Book Stall (811 Elm Street in Winnetka) is excited to host romance novelist Kelly Farmer on Tuesday, December 12 at 6:30 pm. She leads a romance writing panel discussion featuring authors Chandra Blumberg, Danielle Jackson, and Melonie Johnson. The authors will bring their experience and know-how to share the basics of romance publishing with audience members. The panel will cover topics ranging from beginning to write a romance novel, the various tropes in romance, to finding a publishing avenue. They’ll share their tips for finding support, dealing with rejection, and writing reviews. About the Authors: Kelly Farmer has been writing romance novels since junior high. The stories have changed, but one theme remains the same: everyone deserves to have a happy ending. She loves telling tales with a touch of snark and a lot of heart. When not writing, she enjoys being outside in nature, quoting from Eighties movies, listening to all kinds of music, and petting every dog she meets. All of these show up in her books.

Ms. Farmer is the author of the new romance book, It’s a Fabulous Life, perfect for the holiday season! Susie Dumond, author of Queerly Beloved, says, “This delightful small-town holiday rom-com full of sapphic love and drag queens will make your heart grow three sizes. It’s a Fabulous Life is as sweet and heartwarming as a cup of hot cocoa on Christmas morning.” Find out more about her at

Chandra Blumberg writes funny, heartwarming love stories about characters that feel real and relatable. Born and raised in Michigan, Chandra moved to the Chicago area after college. When she’s not writing, she enjoys lifting heavy barbells at the gym, making a mess of the kitchen while baking alongside her four kids, and traveling with her family. She is the author of Digging Up Love and Stirring Up Love. Next summer, be on the lookout for her upcoming novel, Second Tide’s The Charm, a STEM romance featuring shark scientists. Danielle Jackson is a contemporary romance author, avid reader, lackluster-yet-mighty crafter, and accomplished TV binge-watcher. Danielle has had the unique experience of working on almost every side of the book business—as a publicist, an editorial manager of a book review website, an events coordinator at an independent bookstore, and now, an author. Danielle lives in Chicagoland with her very own romance hero husband, darling daughter, and two tempestuous cats. Learn more about her at

Melonie Johnson, the USA Today bestselling author also known as #thewritinglush, enjoys sipping cocktails that start with the letter “m.” Declared a “writer to watch” by Kirkus and a “fizzy, engrossing new voice” by Entertainment Weekly, her smart, funny, and contemporary romances include Too Good to Be Real and her award-winning Sometimes in Love debut series featuring Getting Hot with the Scot, Smitten by the Brit, and Once Upon a Bad Boy. A former high school English and Theatre teacher, she spends her days in her Star Wars office, dreaming up meet-cutes. She lives in Chicagoland with her husband, their two redhead daughters, and one very large dog. Discover more about her at
