Truth Be Told

Artists: Corinne D. Peterson and Pinar Aral

Opening reception: June 9, 2023, 5 PM – 9 PM

Closing July 1, 2023

Get ready for a thought-provoking exhibition as ceramic artists Corinne D. Peterson and Pinar Aral come together in “Truth Be Told”. This show, made possible in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, explores their personal journeys through motherhood, womanhood, and aging. Each sculpture represents a unique interpretation of their feelings, experiences, and memories, offering an intimate glimpse into the artists’ minds.

Pinar Aral, born in Istanbul, Türkiye, has a BA from the Institute of Industrial Design in Florence, Italy. Introduced to clay in 2015, Pinar has found a therapeutic outlet for her emotional and mental well-being, and her sculptures are interpretations of her feelings, experiences, and memories. Her work has been showcased at SOFA, the Merchandise Mart, and reputable galleries in Chicago.

Corinne D. Peterson, on the other hand, grew up on a farm near Anoka, Minnesota, and attended North Park University in Chicago. She initially pursued a career in psychotherapy, but her dreams about clay led her to take a clay class at Lillstreet Art Center. Captivated by the possibilities of artistic expression with clay, Corinne developed her skills, shifted her career focus to art, and has since won numerous residencies at the Ragdale Foundation. Her studio is at Lillstreet, where she produces her sculptures, works with interns, and teaches classes. Peterson’s sculptures can be found in numerous private and public collections, including Kirkland & Ellis, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Deloitte, Burrell Communications, and Oakton College.

Peterson’s clay tile murals and mosaics can be seen at many Chicago area locations, including the CTA station at Roosevelt and State, Latin Middle School, Portage Park Senior Center, and other Chicago Park District facilities. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country, with solo shows at The Cliff Dwellers in Chicago; Noyes Cultural Art Center and Dittmar Gallery at Northwestern University, Evanston; University of Notre Dame in Indiana; and National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei. Her recent group exhibits include CSI at Art Chicago and Bridgeport Art Center, Antonovych, Niespodziewana, Peterson at Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, and outdoor installations at Krasl Biennial Sculpture Invitational 2008-09, Chattanooga River Walk 2009-10, and Form in Flora at Garfield Park Conservatory 2010.

The “Truth Be Told” exhibition offers a unique opportunity to witness the captivating sculptures and stories of these two brilliant artists in one place. With their combined talents, Corinne D. Peterson and Pinar Aral have created a show that is not to be missed.

Be sure to join us for the opening reception on June 9, 2023, from 5 to 9 pm.
