Evanston Jazz: “Donovan’s Garage” Presents Progressive Jazz Quintet
In his “Donovan’s Garage” shows, Evanston-based jazz guitarist Donovan Mixon draws on his deep relationships with Chicago’s finest jazz players to join him in Evanston for free performances. The November show is a perfect example.
It will be the first time in several years that Donovan will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Chicago Jazz Lion, alto saxophonist Ernest Dawkins. Dawkins, composer, band leader and former Chair of the AACM has been a force on the Chicago jazz scene for decades. Dawkins and Donovan have shared the stage many times including performances at the Arts Bank, Logan Center, the Pitchfork Music Festival and the Chicago Jazz Festival. Virtuoso pianist Dennis Luxion, the first Chicago musician Donovan played with 14 years ago will be on stage. By contrast it will be the first time he will get to perform with bassist Evan Levine, one of the hot young jazz cats in town. It will also be a reunion with Cliff Wallace, an eclectic, fiery multi-percussionist and big band leader on drumset.
The “Donovan’s Garage” shows are funded solely by the generosity of our community. In other words, if you appreciate the music, keep in mind that it is your donations that support it.
This night, at “Donovan’s Garage,” the music, described as progressive jazz, will consist of well conceived but loosely stitched themes held together by group improvisation. As listeners, be prepared to hold onto your seats; expect extremes in dynamics, tempos and textures. Wear loose fitting comfortable clothing.
