“Donovan’s Garage Jazz event: Perseverance–The Tenacity of Black Americans

This Donovan’s Garage event is a fundraiser for the Evanston NAACP, celebrating Black HIstory Month in Evanston. The show will weave the rhythms of jazz with poetry and song to explore the tenacity of Black Americans in forging their distinctive path through the nation’s history. Evanston jazz guitarist Donovan Mixon’s ‘Justice Ensemble’ is a sextet of prominent Chicago improvising musicians, all of which are members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). This ‘new music’ ensemble will perform original and reimagined works reflecting the lives, traditions, and conditions of Black Americans through the writings of Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes and the music of Billie Holiday and Donovan Mixon.

Mixon’s ‘Justice Ensemble’ brings together some of Chicago’s finest jazz musicians for this event.  Read about them:
