Becoming The Breeze: Alex Chitty With Alexander Calder

For Becoming the Breeze: Alex Chitty with Alexander Calder, Chicago-based artist Alex Chitty reveals the invisible processes behind when the museum presents one of the most visible artists in Chicago, Alexander Calder. Drawing attention to the conventions of museum display, this exhibit showcases recent drawings, photographs, and sculptures by Chitty in playful conversation with several Calder works from the MCA Collection, including Performing Seal, Orange Under Table, and Chat-mobile, among others. Giving insight to the behind-the-scenes work that drives exhibitions, Chitty creates a new set of photographs documenting the installation and de-installation process of a mobile that hangs in the gallery. In another work, she responds to MCA visitor comments that Calder mobiles are intended to move in the wind with a replica of one of his mobiles stirred by the gentle breeze of an electric fan. Nearby, an authentic Calder mobile is presented completely static in its permanent museum storage tray. Known for blurring the boundaries between found and fabricated objects, Chitty prompts visitors to reframe how they see and interact with Calder’s iconic artwork.
