  • All are invited to a fiesta celebrating the diverse stories of creativity on Chicago’s West Side. Inspired by the National Museum of Mexican Art’s exhibition Arte Diseño Xicágo: Mexican Inspiration from the World's Columbian Exposition to the Civil Rights Era exploring the contributions of Mexican and Mexican-American artists and designers in Chicago, the fiesta offers a wide array of hands-on activities and demonstrations throughout the day.

A sample of the day’s programming includes:

    • A self-guided mural hunt inviting participants to gather clues at the museum and follow them as they walk through the neighborhood of Pilsen. Visitors will discover beautiful, historically significant murals by local artists including Hector Duarte, Alejandro Medina, and Jeff Zimmerman.
    • A printmaking demonstration by members of the local collective Instituto Gráfico de Chicago and by the UIC Latino Cultural Center.
    • An open-air craft market, or “Tianguis,” featuring local vendors who will showcase their own talents.
    • A variety of live music performances, emceed by Pilsen-based karaoke entrepreneur Pablo Serrano, featuring local Chicago bands Súbele and You Are Here.
    • A performance based on the experiences of Chicago’s Mexican-American and immigrant communities by Free Street Theatre’s “Meet Juanito Doe” ensemble, followed by a storytelling workshop.
    • An array of art-based activities—such as monoprinting, fiber arts demonstrations, puppet making, creative selfies, and more—led by additional Art Design Chicago partners Chicago Public Library YOUMedia program, Illinois Humanities, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, The National Public Housing Museum and Jane Addams Hull-House Museum.
    • Attendees are also invited to bring lunch or snacks and make use of picnic tables in the surrounding park area.
