Chicago Like a Local Blog

Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Tag - Steppenwolf Theatre

If you have a tween or teen in your life, you know that it's a tad more difficult finding theater that fits their interests (and attention spans). Enter the critically acclaimed Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which creates two full-scale, engaging professional productions, designed with older tweens and teens in mind, each season. Each year, the SYA poses a timely new question, examines the question through theater and then asks the youth-filled audience to come to their own answers and conclusions. This year's question is “When does a lie become the truth?"

360 Chicago

There's absolutely nothing going on this weekend in Chicago... April Fools! Did you really believe that? We're welcoming April this weekend with some fun, sweet and savory events you can't miss. There's a two-day bacon fest; a crazy colorful cake shake that's basically an Easter treat for adults; and a nightly sky series at 360 Chicago that has something for everyone: craft beer, yoga and more. It's time to make your weekend plans — here's our top picks.

The Magic Parlour

Chicago has always been a magical city: During the Golden Age of Magic—from 1890 to 1930—the city brimmed with magicians. They performed their acts in vaudeville theaters, shops and taverns and even on street corners. In 1893, magicians from near and far, including Harry Houdini, traveled to Chicago to make their mark at the World's Columbian Exposition. If you're looking to add a little magic to your life these days, check out three one-of-a-kind magic shows in Chicago.

The Illusionists

Hundreds of theatre productions are playing in Chicago for extended runs (hello Hamilton!) and open runs (from Blue Man Group to the many great nightly shows at The Second City), however, some only offer performances for a few days or a few weeks. Here are four highlights of what to see on stage now in Chicago before it's too late!

Front Bar

Imagine the perfect night in Chicago: a tasty meal, great drinks, wonderful conversation and a captivating show to top it off. Now imagine doing all of that in one place. Sounds too good to be true, right? Not in this city. Because Chicago is a world-class theater city and a world-class restaurant destination, we naturally have a few amazing places where you can do all of the above under one roof.

Stingray Touch
We've made it through the first month of the new year, and we've still got quite the year to look forward to in Chicago. I love raising my kids in Chicago; every year we can count on brand-new exhibits, restaurants, educational programs and stage performances that welcome children and families with open arms. Here are some of our most anticipated family-friendly events and attractions for 2014.

Steppenwolf Lord Of The Flies

Why do good people sometimes do bad thing? Steppenwolf for Young Adults' 2013/14 season poses this age old question with Nigel Williams's adaptation of William Golding's classic, Lord of the Flies. When a plane wreck strands a group of English boys on a deserted island during wartime, their innocence is quickly lost to violent choices. You know the story - now share it with your teens.

If you're a voracious reader like me, check out Chicago's amazing One Book, One Chicago program. Launched in 2011, our wonderful Chicago Public Library hosts dozens of book discussion groups and free or low cost public programming related to one book each season of the year. This fall's selection, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, is now on stage at the Steppenwolf for Young Adults.
