10 OUTSIDE-THE-BOX CHICAGO EXPERIENCES

Thursday, August 2, 2018 8:00 AM by Judy Giannetto

Exhibitions not your thing? Only go to the ballpark to grab a hotdog? Can’t sit still long enough to take in a show? If you want an out-of-the ordinary, not your father’s vacation, only-in-Chicago kind of experience, these 10 places are just the ticket.

Whether your thing is food or film, music or museums, Frank Lloyd Wright or wildlife, Chicago’s fall line up of new and annual tours, attractions and events will leave you wide-eyed and filled with a sense of wanderlust.

It’s a little mind-blowing arriving on the site of Chicago’s Museum Campus. Gorgeous neoclassical buildings set within verdant landscapes, and the gentle lapping of Lake Michigan’s waves make this a dream-like excursion to the realm of history, nature, science and culture.

Have you ever dreamed of waddling with a penguin, sharing a tasty bite of kale with a giraffe, or kissing... a beluga? Three new animal experiences will give you the chance to do all of the above and more. Make all your wildest dreams come true with new animal encounters at Chicagoland's best zoos and stellar aquarium.

Jazz fans don't have to wait until the famed Chicago Jazz Festival (though the 2017 headliners were just announced!) to hear live jazz in the Windy City. This is a music lovers paradise so you can catch all types of live music on any night of the week. But there are special weekly events in the summer that make hearing live jazz a warm weather treat. The Museum of Contemporary Art hosts Tuesdays on the Terrace, the Shedd Aquarium supplies Jazzin' at the Shedd and the Jazz Institute of Chicago holds the Chicago Latin Jazz Fest (coming up this weekend July 14-16, add it to your calendar!).

Only in Chicago can you travel the world of holiday traditions, celebrate with the belugas and eat breakfast with both Santa and a T. rex. Here are six ways to celebrate the season at Chicago's most beloved museums

Museum Campus ChicagoChicago's Museum Campus is a 57-acre park located alongside Lake Michigan and is home to 3 beloved city institutions: the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium, and The Field Museum of Natural History. The entire area is landscaped with greenery and flora making the campus a wonderful place for a summer picnic. Follow the isthmus to nearby Northerly Island, where a nature area features beautiful strolling paths and an unbeatable view of the Chicago skyline.
