Pilsen CTA

Many visitors to Chicago might not get a chance to venture beyond the Loop, so why not hop on the Pink Line and take a trip to Pilsen? It started life as an immigrant incubator for people from Eastern Europe and today it is made vibrant and wonderful by Mexicans and other Latinos who’ve come to Chicago for a range of opportunities. So hop on the Pink Line and follow me to 18th Street for a short visit to a couple of the area’s most unique destinations.

A Tour of Pilsen's Shops and Boutiques

Modern Co-op

Although there's plenty of Chicago memorabilia in most major downtown retail establishments, it's always a fun idea to go on a search for something a little more authentic, unusual or one-of-a-kind. This is especially true if you're in search of that special gift or simply something new to add to your home.

Take a day trip south to Pilsen and check out some of the neighborhood's shops and boutiques, most curated by local artists. It's a great way to support local businesses while indulging in the culture of the vibrant neighborhood.

Cinco De Mayo

Growing up in a Mexican family in Chicago, there were always three guarantees: pride in our heritage was abundant, food and beverage were serious matters, and life was loud.  As an adult, things have not changed.  As we celebrate Cinco de Mayo today, all three will undoubtedly join together to make an appearance. Maybe that's even true for you. But before we begin the celebration, some history.

Nuevo Leon Mexican Restaurant

Walk around this neighborhood and you'll see landmark murals, distinctive Pilsen flair, vintage shops and modern treasures. You won't forget 18th Street, the heart of Pilsen, either. This west side neighborhood boasts culinary institutions like Nuevo Leon (pictured), Kristoffer's Bakery and Nightwood. But don't sleep on some of the area's lesser known, but comprably delicious hidden gems.
