Chicago Like a Local Blog

Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Tag - old town school of folk music

The leaves aren't the only thing changing in Chicago right now. Michigan Avenue is preparing for the opening of a flagship Apple store, and we're all planning out which identities we'll assume for Halloween festivities ahead of October 31. It finally feels as though we're settling into the brisker weather, so we're glad so many of this weekend's events are cozy, indoor ventures.

The Whistler

Spring is here in Chicago and things are warming up in the Windy City. Warmer temperatures means that there's even more to do in the city, as markets open their doors and song and dance fill the air (no, really!). Most of the options in our list are free things to do in Chicago this month, with a few that will run you less than $10.

Here are 12 free things to do in April that shouldn't be missed.

The Joffrey Ballet

February is jam-packed with a roster of exciting and varied dance events, with the blurring of genre lines as modern meets tradition. The Shen Yun Show highlights ancient Chinese tradition at the Harris Theater, while challenging programming from The Joffrey Ballet's "Game Changers" sends us to the cutting edge in contemporary ballet at the Auditorium Theatre. Kick the winter blahs, get out of the house, and See Chicago Dance!

Badi Assad

Carnival season may be over but music lovers can still enjoy the Brazilian rhythms of singer-songwriter Badi Assad. The influential Brazilian musician, who hails from a noted family of artists, brings her innovative guitar stylings to Old Town School of Folk Music on March 2 for their World Music Wednesdays series.

Old Town School of Folk

The Old Town School of Folk Music is one of Chicago's most cherished institutions, and they long ago expanded the definition of "folk music" beyond Americana to encompass global traditions and the modern sounds that are built on them. Pueblo Latino Chicago is their initiative that provides programming through classes, workshops and concerts that celebrate the diverse cultures of Spain, Brazil, and Spanish speaking America - catch one of their concerts tonight!
