Chicago Like a Local Blog

Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Chicago is a bit of a pop-up mecca, with The Office, Harry Potter and Stranger Things being only a few of the see-and-be-seen themes on the city’s nightlife radar recently. In September, though, some of the city’s hottest booze-centric happenings are exuding a rather intellectual vibe, as time-honored, world-renowned museums join forces with speakeasies, cocktail joints and musicians to create limited-run experiences for all those partiers out there with an insatiable, uncontainable sense of curiosity.

Chicago's standing as a significant 20th and 21st century art influencer can't be denied. And the world knows it.

This spring, the city is hosting a series of major exhibitions that call attention to Chicago-born and Chicago-connected artists whose work has fundamentally impacted the contemporary art scene: Nina Chanel Abney (February 10-May 6) and Keith Haring (March 3-September 23), both at the Chicago Cultural Center, and Kenneth Josephson (April 28-December 30), at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

We might be a big city, but Chicago is rooted in its neighborhoods. This weekend, learn about the cultural fabrics that make up many of our neighborhoods. Whether you choose to explore museums that are part of the Chicago Cultural Alliance or get an early start with authentic Dia de los Muertos celebrations, learn more about who makes up the fabric of Chicago's diversity. You'll also get a good glimpse of the city's variety of background during this week's round up of events.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) celebrates its 50th year with the theme “Experience today what people will be talking about tomorrow.” The MCA will be offering an exciting series of exhibitions, programs, events, and the unveiling of the museum building’s newest redesign.

Jazz fans don't have to wait until the famed Chicago Jazz Festival (though the 2017 headliners were just announced!) to hear live jazz in the Windy City. This is a music lovers paradise so you can catch all types of live music on any night of the week. But there are special weekly events in the summer that make hearing live jazz a warm weather treat. The Museum of Contemporary Art hosts Tuesdays on the Terrace, the Shedd Aquarium supplies Jazzin' at the Shedd and the Jazz Institute of Chicago holds the Chicago Latin Jazz Fest (coming up this weekend July 14-16, add it to your calendar!).

Visiting the Windy City this summer? Chicago is a must-visit destination every season of the year, but in the summertime, it truly shines. From our beautiful, Lake Michigan beaches to our playful, imaginative parks, there is something for every adventure-loving family under the sun. Budget-wise moms and dads will be happy to learn that the best things to see and do this summer in Chicago are totally free!

Here are our family's picks for the top seven free things to do this summer in Chicago.

The merry month of May is blooming with dance in Chicago. Audiences can delight in a colorful springtime bouquet of ballet, modern dance, and tap of all kinds, beginning with Jessica Lang Dance's welcome return visit with a new-to-Chicago multi-disciplinary story ballet, and wrapping up the month with Chicago Dance Crash's insanely fun annual dress-up dance event, KTF: A Night of Villains," and much, much more! Here are the top dance performances to see in Chicago this month.

The Joffrey Ballet

February is jam-packed with a roster of exciting and varied dance events, with the blurring of genre lines as modern meets tradition. The Shen Yun Show highlights ancient Chinese tradition at the Harris Theater, while challenging programming from The Joffrey Ballet's "Game Changers" sends us to the cutting edge in contemporary ballet at the Auditorium Theatre. Kick the winter blahs, get out of the house, and See Chicago Dance!

MCA Prime Time

If you think Chicago music is just about Kanye and R. Kelly, then you should check out the Museum of Contemporary Art's Prime Time after-hours series, which explores the pulse of the city's creative community. The interactive program features live music, performance art and film screenings for evenings of cultural highlights and discourse.
