Drinking Up the Chicago Flag: Star 2

Liz Flag Beer

This is the second piece in a five-part series about the history of the Chicago flag and its connections to Chicago drinking history. Read Part 1 here.

It’s no secret that Chicago is quickly becoming a key player in the rapidly growing brewing industry. But this certainly isn’t our first time at the beer rodeo. As important as railroads and stockyards were to our city, so was beer. Chicago is, in fact, a city built on beer and it was a thriving beer town before the Great Fire of 1871 devastated both the city and the local brewing scene.

Chillfest

"Baby, it's cold outside," is no excuse to stay cooped up indoors. Chicago's bringing it every weekend, this one especially. Tons of free events are going on this weekend, including the always awesome 2nd Fridays on the Cultural Mile, the Annual Holiday Bazaar, Diwali Festival at the Art Institute, and the chill Chillfest. In the meantime, check out the Lincoln Park Zoo's Sleepover with the Animals and the Lively Water Whiskey Festival at The Field Museum (fortunately those don't overlap...).

Let's go, Chicago.

Chicago's Must-See Concerts: June

But it's important to remember that as fun as block parties are sometimes it's nice to get away from the summer heat and get into an air conditioned club to catch a band play. If you want some solid options for June, this is what we suggest.

Green Zebra - Dish - Blog

The first week of February is an excellent time to be anyone with an appetite in Chicago. That's because some of the city's most beloved restaurants offer special dishes (or even whole menus) for the annual Chicago Restaurant Week.  With meat or fish as a traditional centerpiece for a number of these listings, a question has reached my ears that I feel obliged to answer: What's a vegetarian to do?

The cast of Marriott Theatre's "Dreamgirls."

At a recent blogger meet-up, I learned two things. One: If I hope to start making any real money blogging, I need to start a fashion blog. Pronto. Two: I guess I should probably gain a sense of fashion at some point.

Baby steps.

I also learned that people whom I'd consider uniquely tuned into the city -- local cultural bloggers -- have shockingly limited sense of the breadth and depth of theatre this city offers.
