A trip to Navy Pier always promises a day of fun; but this summer, Chicago's No.1 tourist attraction ups the ante with a brand-new, 13-acre green outdoor space that's packed with amazing (and free!) programming. Polk Bros Park will now serve as the Pier’s gateway and the city’s unofficial front yard. Two performance and picnic-friendly lawns, located at the south end of the park, will offer free arts and cultural programming throughout the summer and beyond.

If you haven't been to the Lakefront Trail in Chicago, you're missing a lot of natural beauty (all FREE for everyone to enjoy), efficient transportation to Chicago's neighborhoods, and a great opportunity to get in a workout. Here's why we love the Chicago Lakefront Trail, and some things you might not have known about it.

Sheffield Garden Walk

You might know Chicago as the "Windy City" or the "City of Broad Shoulders", but one of our city's most appropriate nicknames is the "Garden City." Indeed our city's seal states clearly Urbs in Horto, Latin for "garden in city". As summer rolls around, the reason for this flowery nickname is evident: everywhere you turn, you'll see gardens big and small, in our backyards, on our parkways, even on our balconies and rooftops! If you want an intimate peek into the lovely gardens that shape our city, check out these celebrated summer garden walks.

Garfield Park Conservatory L Train

The rumble rumble of the elevated train is one of the defining features of a visit via the CTA to the 184 acres that comprise the wonders of Garfield Park. Of course, most visitors know the stellar expanse of the Garfield Park Conservatory as one of the highlights, as well they should. It is open daily and admission is FREE.
