When people hear "dinner theater," they may beg to do anything else. But Chicago is home to some hilarious interactive shows that, yes, feature meals—but more importantly, highlight the fun factor. Eye rolls are replaced with gut-busting laughs, and you won’t want the fun to end. Grab a date or a group of friends for a memorable night at these Chicago shows.

A Kiki is urban slang for a party with good music and friends meant to calm the nerves, allowing people to spill the tea and dish the dirt for the purpose of reducing anxiety and stress. Given the political climate, the LGBTQ community and their allies seem in desperate need of a kiki.

Early in 2017, the Laugh Factory Chicago (3175 North Broadway) launched the new LGBTQ monthly show, the Kiki — Queer Comedy with Variety. Since then, the Kiki has provided a solid roster featuring Chicago’s top queer talent.

Improv theater originated in Chicago, so it's no surprise that the Windy City hosts a wide array of improv theater troupes and productions. Some theaters such as The Second City and iO Theater draw national attention and some, like the quirky Cornservatory, are Chicago insider faves.

Since 1999, Cornservatory, a nonprofit theater, has been cracking up crowds with bawdy, inventive shows that examine everything from religion to sports and sci-fi. Here are two shows now playing at the Conservatory to consider expanding your theater intake:

The Second City presents Afro-Futurism

The legendary Chicago comedy destination, The Second City, gets an entertaining dose of social and political commentary with the satirical revue, Afro-Futurism. Combining stand-up, sketch, music and performance, the production offers a multi-faceted view of the African-American perspective.

Greg Hess

Greg Hess is a man of many comedic talents. He's a member of both my favorite improv troupes, Cook County Social Club and The Improvised Shakespeare Company, and he is also now representing the Chicago comedy community in Los Angeles with the production of his new pilot "Schlub Life." Greg and Cook County member, Mark Raterman, created, wrote and will now be producing this pilot starring, fellow Cook County member, Brendan Jennings, for Comedy Central this summer. Greg made time in his bustling schedule to talk with me about the process, production and inspiration behind this pilot.

Katydids Chicago

You've probably already heard about Seth Meyers, Russell Brandt, David Cross and others coming to the Chicago Theatre for Just for Laughs. I wrote about some of the other shows earlier on Chicago Like a Local, but the JFL well runs deep. Stage 773's four theatres are playing host to a cornucopia of smaller shows that look every bit as funny as the headliners.

The Katydids

"There's something about a girl named Kate," Caitlin Barlow told me. And if there's something about one, just wait until you see six of them.

Individually, the Katydids are Caitlin Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O'Brien and Katie Thomas. Together they're one of the hottest comedy groups in the country.
