Summer is flying by, Chicago! July is now over halfway done and if you haven’t had the chance to experience a craft beer event, this weekend is a perfect opportunity. Friday Night Flights continues downtown and Chicago Craft Beer Festival is joining with a music and garden event in Lincoln Park. Beer is not the only thing being highlighted this weekend. A Michigan Avenue art fest and a River North tasting event will be open to visitors of all ages. Add the list of events below to your calendar and don’t forget to check out our July list of festivals and August list of festivals to look forward to for the rest of the summer!

The comedy scene in Chicago is huge. In fact, you can see shows live seven nights a week all over the city. Many of them come and go, but these four Chicago comedy staples always entertain, no matter when—and how often—you drop in for a show.

Front Bar

Imagine the perfect night in Chicago: a tasty meal, great drinks, wonderful conversation and a captivating show to top it off. Now imagine doing all of that in one place. Sounds too good to be true, right? Not in this city. Because Chicago is a world-class theater city and a world-class restaurant destination, we naturally have a few amazing places where you can do all of the above under one roof.

The Second City presents Afro-Futurism

The legendary Chicago comedy destination, The Second City, gets an entertaining dose of social and political commentary with the satirical revue, Afro-Futurism. Combining stand-up, sketch, music and performance, the production offers a multi-faceted view of the African-American perspective.

Three Female-Fueled Comedy Shows to See This Week

Almost A Genius

Some people like to jump on the “women aren’t funny” bandwagon. Well, I just won’t have that. If funny ladies (and Emmy Award winners) like Tina Fey and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss can come out of Chicago, guess what? There’s plenty more where they came from and here’s a few of them I’m recommending you go see this week.

Carisa Barreca

Carisa Barreca is a resident actor on The Second City's e.t.c Stage. She is one of six cast members of "A Clown Car Named Desire," which was actually just nominated for a Jeff Award. She is a graduate of Marquette University and has been a performer for most of her life. She is truly the kindest of souls and such a delight. She carved out time to sit down with me and talk a little bit about her journey through Second City and "A Clown Car Named Desire."

Chicago Comedy: The Back-to-School Basics

Back to School Comedy Syllabus

Chicago is known for comedy. You can see some of your favorite stand-ups at The Laugh Factory, explore famous sketch shows at The Second City, venture to the lesser-known improv shows at iO or laugh it up at local drinking shows. This city is filled with so many options; sometimes it can be overwhelming, so let's break it down. Here's a quick overview of your "back-to-school" basics - the Chicago comedy syllabus.

Brit Belsheim

I have been in this community for almost two years. In that time, I've had the pleasure of learning from, performing with, and watching hundreds of improvisers. A few weeks ago, I named "Nine Major Players in Chicago Comedy to Watch Out for in 2013" and I'm back again to bless the internet with some of the city's best on the spot performers. As was the case with the last list, these are not the only players to watch out for this fall. In fact, there are too many talented locals to name and hilarious stage shows presented every night in this city. With that, I present to you six up and coming Chicago improvisers you don't want to miss.

Chicago Comedy Scene

It's that time of year again - Saturday Night Live auditions are taking place, people are tightening up their "5 minutes" and putting up some of the best work of the year. Over the past 18 months, I've watched dozens of improvisers and hand picked nine that I think you should keep your eye out for this year and beyond. Take a look, there's a good chance a future SNL cast member or comedy show writer might come out of this list. So now it's in writing...I called it.
