Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Tag - Black History Month

Founded by the black explorer Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, Chicago's black history runs deep.

You only have to delve into the creation of gospel and electrified blues, or read about the country's first African American president to get a glimpse into Chicago's significance to America's black cultural history.

Photography aficionados may know Helen Balfour Morrison for her portraits of famous Americans, displayed in museums across the country, including the Art Institute of Chicago and MoMA. In 1935, Morrison turned her eye toward the rarely shown experience of African American "freetowns," small independent communities that formed after the abolishment of slavery. The photos capture an important piece of African American history, and are now on display at the Newberry Library's new exhibit, Photographing Freetowns—don't miss an opportunity to see it while you can!

February in Chicago always brings a host of cultural selections, and the choices are even richer to honor Black History Month. Most of the city's museums, libraries and theaters showcase aspects of black culture for the month with engaging events. From galleries to orchestras, enjoy the legacy of black creativity with these upcoming highlights.

Chicago's Bronzeville The Musical

If not for the Great Migration, Chicago wouldn't enjoy such a rich musical legacy of blues, jazz, gospel and soul music. Many people don't make the connection between the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to Chicago between 1916 and 1970, and Chicago's cultural history, but Chicago's Bronzeville—The Musical is about to change all of that.

Black Creativity Exhibit
