If you're interested in fine dining exhibitions, steins full of the good stuff, and wrecking it on the dance floor to polka music, Chicago is the place to be this weekend. Hyde Parking is hosting a jazz festival, Bill Burr is slaying the Chicago Theatre and 60 local artists will be showcased at Edgewater Fall Art Fair. Get loose, it's time to make weekend plans.
Chicago Gourmet 2013, now in its sixth year, is one of the fall's biggest culinary events. More than 150 of city's best restaurants and chefs (as well as mixologists, wine makers and craft brewers) will pack Millennium Park to offer a grandiose taste Chicago. Expect a packed schedule full of cooking demonstrations, gourmet tastings and seminars.
The event opens with Friday's Hamburger Hop, a competition between more than a dozen local chefs to crown the city's best burger. Celebrity Chef judges include Yoshi Katsumura of Yoshi Café and Graham Elliot, as well as the night's emcees Adam Rapoport and Andrew Knowlton of Bon Appetit.
We know it's September, but Chicago's getting on the bratwurst and stein train early this year. The weekend's festivities - which you'll find at the intersection of Lincoln, Wellington and Southport - include Friday's Craft Beer Night, authentic German music and Sunday's family day. Admission is $5.
And you though music festival season was over. Hyde Park Jazz Festival is a weekend-long celebration of swing notes and trumpet solos. With national and internationally acclaimed performers, this event features an outdoor dance floor, artisan vendors and, of course, delicious fare. From Jeff Parker Trio to Dee Alexander Quartet, this weekend's lineup is not to be missed. For a full schedule of performers and venues, click here.
For almost two decades, Bill Burr's been on a standup comedy grind. From small clubs to podcasts (and eventually performances on late night TV), nothing has been handed to this guy and you see the edge in every performance. He's like Dennis Leary meets Lewis Black at Bell in Hand after midnight, which means this is a show you can't miss.
Edgewater Fall Art Fair is one of those all encompassing festivals that has 60 local artists (presenting everything from photography to handmade jewelry), a beer garden with live music and a fashion runway show. In other words, there's something for everyone. The kiddies get some love too, with a children's activity corner and a two-hour jam session for young people.
