Chicago at Sunrise

It's Mother's Day weekend, so Chicago Like a Local suggests you show love the one person on this planet that knows it's your birthday without a day-of prompting by Facebook. The Spirit of Chicago and Odyssey Lake Michigan (formerly Odyssey Cruises) are both offering Mother's Day voyages of Lake Michigan, and for added inspiration we have a helpful guide for treating the family matriarch. But Chicago's more than brunches, massage gift certificates and artisanal baskets of exotic soaps scented with natural oils, so treat yourself too. Get loose because it's time to make weekend plans.

Bo Burnham at The Vic Theatre (5/10)

Bo Burnham became internet famous in 2008 with a string of funny and remarkably well composed pop songs. His act went viral and now he's moving the stand-up comedy/concert hybrid from YouTube to the big stage. Burnham also stars in Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous, a new show on MTV that centers, rather poetically, on a recent high school graduates' quest for 15 minutes of fame. Burnham's clock stars now, let's see how long he can last.

Lisa Loeb at City Winery (5/10 & 5/11)

I know every word to "Stay." Even that quick breakdown parts. As a sensitive troublemaker, that kind of introspective reaction to unrequited love really resonates with me. I can't wait to have a couple glasses of Argentinian Malbec, reflect through to Lisa Loeb's first set and send my high school prom date some Drake lyric text messages.

Maximize Your Life: Jillian Michaels at the Auditorium Theatre (5/10)

This sounds just crazy enough to be awesome. In case you don't know, Jillian Michaels is a trainer on NBC's The Biggest Loser who, apparently, shotguns an eight-pack of 20 oz. Red Bull and screams at people until they fall off of treadmills. Now, she's hitting the self-help circuit and not a moment too soon. It's time to take control of my life and the only thing separating me from a daily routine of kickboxing, yoga and plyometrics are some fervently delivered platitudes. Your last easy day was yesterday, so on and so forth.

Shen Yun at Cadillac Palace Theatre (5/10-5/12)

With music and dance inspired by 5,000 years of Chinese culture, Shen Yun features acrobatics and thunderous battle drums. Expect a sensory overload with vibrant set design, powerful vocals and unbelievable feats of athleticism.

American Beer Classic at Soldier Field (5/11)

Soldier Field becomes a caricature of itself on Saturday with an enormous celebration of American's beers and breweries. The ultimate man cave experience features home brewing demonstrations, tours and live music. If you're interested in exploring a Chicago-specific itinerary of local beers and breweries, click here.
