Chicago may have one of the largest Chinatowns in North America, but this year Chinese New Year celebrations will be happening city-wide! From January 31 through February 14, Chicago will host holiday festivities, cultural performances and even a large fireworks display to celebrate the Chinese New Year. What kind of festivitites, you ask? To name a few, an event called Luminance will be taking place over the weekend at the Millennium Park Ice Rink as a canvas of colorful lights will transform the skating rink into a shadow show; the Shops at North Bridge will be celebrating the Year of the Horse with special offers and in-store events; the Chinese New Year Lightscape will take over State Street between Lake Street and Van Buren Street for a unique light and sound experience that creates vivid patterns of color choreographed to music. A colossal highlight of the Chicago Chinese New Year Celebrations will take place this Saturday at Navy Pier, with indoor and outdoor entertainment starting at 6PM. The Chinese Lunar New Year Parade is a bring-out-all-the-stops kind of celebration, with marching bands, floats, lion dances, a traditional dragon and so much more.
